Maximum number of units allowed per semester at USC?

What is the maximum number of units allowed per semester at USC?

A multi-part answer:

18 units is the maximum included with your standard tuition. Any units over 18 cost $1,360 each.

USC recommends undergraduates take a maximum of 18 units.

You can register for up to 20 without special permission. (Again, an extra $1,360 for each unit.)

To register for more than 20 units, you will need written permission from your school or department and clearance from your advisor.

[Schedule of Classes: Fall 2010: General Registration Information: Enrollment/Registration](http://www.usc.edu/academics/classes/term_20103/reg_info/)

you can take 20 units w/o penalty if you’re a renaissance scholar (double major or major/minor in 2 highly differently fields) and have a 3.75+gpa in both fields. i think you have to get some paperwork approved for that.

^ It is The USC Academic Achievement Award. Here is the link for the paperwork: [USC Academic Achievement Award | Undergraduate Education](http://undergrad.usc.edu/renaissance/achievement_award.html)

**The program isn’t available to first-semester students /B.

does this unit-limit apply to summer sessions at usc?

The 20-unit limit? Yes, you would still need written approval from your school or department to register for more than 20 units is the summer session. (It might actually be a lower limit in the summer, but I can not find anything that says so.)

The 18-units-included-in-the-tuition part does NOT apply to summer, though. For summer session, it is a per-unit charge of $1,360 each unit - so if you register for 8 units it would be $10,880, if you register for 16 units it would be $21,760, etc…

*the $1,360 is an increase of $61/unit from this summer when it was $1,299 per unit.

@ alamemom

thanks for the info!! =)

you do NOT have to be a rennaissance scholar to qualify for the academic achievement award. eg. business and accounting would not qualify for RS but would qualify for AAA

will it be cheaper to take 16 units (paying per unit) during summer session 2011 at usc? or take 16 units (paying a flat fee for 12-18 units) during fall 2011 semester?

since tuition fee increases by each school year (2010-2011 then 2011-2012), would it actually be cheaper for me to complete my degree during summer 2011? or fall 2011?

@alamemom, does the USC academic achievement award apply to incoming junior transfers as well?

^^ it applies AFTER you have taken classes at USC AND have earned a cumulative USC GPA of at least 3.750.
