MAY 2005 SAT TEST – FORM THREE (writing experimental)

did anyone here put “panache” for one of the harder fill in the blank ones?

i remember that i didn’t put panache

“Sensationalize” was correct.
30 was correct on the Juan problem - 10 people in front of Juan, 19 people behind Juan, plus Juan himself makes 30.
I put “describe a childhood memory” because it is not so much a character sketch of the teacher as a description of her class rules and their effects.
I put “the median does not change,” because only the outliers (least 5, greatest 3) are modified, and the median in a 17 number set is 8 numbers in.
I was torn on the “African blues” passage between if “But without context, culture means nothing” (roughly) was a “lesson learned” or a “scholarly hypothesis.” I ended up putting “scholarly hypothesis,” but there are tenable arguments in my head for either.

duplicity…panache was the answer to that question

Yes - “panache” was correct because he lied (duplicitous) with “passion” (panache)

what did you guys get for the grid ins?

Also, which was the experimental…was it the one with the Shakespeare or the Great Wall of California?

For the one about “plains in Kenya,” I put “A” (the one w/no change). For some reason (probably fatigue), this one was sort of hard for me also.

yay thats what i had, did anyone put “redulant” and something like “waft” or “ebb” with it? it was one of the harder fill in the blanks. it had something to do with louisiana i think.

yea i put lesson learned…

hypothesis he wouldve made before the trip… and he didnt understand the need for context in which the music is made before he went on the trip… which is why his plans were drstically changed… which is why it is a lesson learned

I think the Juan one was 30. I put character sketch for the one about the teacher because I thought of the passage as describing her and what impact she had on the kids’ lives. I put “lesson learned”…I dunno, it was just stated like it was her definite revelation and not just a hypothesis.

does anyone remember questions/answers for the great wall thing

Did anybody know the math question that was #16 in section 2, it asked about the line that was tangent that connected the two points on the tangest circles with radius 6 and raidus 1.

Also, this is what I got for math, maybe you will recognize some of the answers, i don’t got the problems, these are just the answers that come to my head.

Section 2:

32 hours
200 degrees
Point A (straight above B because it was (a,b) and then (a,2b)
65 degrees
14. 6 lbs. of cheese
15. (r+1)/r
17. No Change in median (17 numbers, 3 greatest inc., 5 lowest decreased)
18. 2R
19. 2N-2 (Axel question with the truck. First two axels were $2, all others were $2/ea.)
20. I, II & III

Section 6:
Even
192
Parabola that was concave right (symmetrical around the X-axis)
36
36 (dunno the two 36 problems, but i got 36 two times in a row)
4 miles
3/4 shaded (rectangle w/ half shaded then 1/4 shaded)
1/9 (this was the x^2 problem i think)
9 (had something like x+2y = 3, what does x^2 +4xy+4y^2 equal?)
1020 (problem where it had 5 numbers with avg. of 60, if add m and average is now 220, what is m - something like that)
K=7 (had some questions)
200 Apartment buildings
5/4 Slope (or 1.25)

Section 9:
5a=6
15X+12Y
Probablity of 1 (set 1 was all odd, set 2 all even, asked if random from each would be odd if added together)
Boston & L.A. (they were equal to 12)
Bill did not go
(2/X) < 2
-1 < X < 2
396 (a 100 cube/side rectangle, how many are on the perimeter? (400-4))
K=4
sq. root of 34
Remainder 3 (if r/7 has remainder 2, 5r/7 has remainder of what?)
a=4-2b (given two lines, find formula for (a,b) where (a,b) is on both lines)
I and II Only

Some might be wrong because I either don’t remember them right, or I did them wrong. I try to remember as many math answers as I can so that I can compare with friends when we are all done. Hopefully this helps, please post any you feel are wrong.

The experimental was section 3.

“Did anybody know the math question that was #16 in section 2, it asked about the line that was tangent that connected the two points on the tangest circles with radius 6 and raidus 1.”
I got about 2.61 = ((square root of 13) minus 1)
I didn’t realize that the line would make a 90 deg. angle until the last min.

“Great Wall” there was only one hard question - one where the answer was either “community issues affecting everyone” or something like “principally, community issues” (which I put).

For the “Louisiana” question, I am pretty sure the answer is “redolent” and “waft,” because although “suggestive” would have worked, “ebb” is like the opposite of “flow” (i.e., decreasing).

As far as the trip question, the author even says that he “somehow knew” that the slavery thing impacted it even before the trip (when he was packing his microphones), even if he couldn’t express it “symbolically” in terms of the boxes. That’s why I put “scholarly hypothesis” - he seemed to want to make a generalized statement there, that was more broad than a simple “lesson learned” about slavery and the blues.

gigante do you remember the question for the one that you have the answer as sqrt 34?

the sq. root of 34 one that to do with a triangle and figuring out the sides, and I got the sides of 3 and 5 I believe.

what was the louisiana waft question about?

The lousiana question was a sentance completion.

i put redulant and … for the louisiana waft question. anyone know that right answer?

i mean what was the context of it because i remember choosing another one but i dont remember why
