@everyone worrying about their 7xx score
800>790>780 etc. Each 10 point increment is obviously higher and thus better, even though only slightly. Without recognizing those slight differences, we might as well say an 800 is tantamount to a 600.
790 is good; if two people were identical in every regard (essays, recs, personality, etc) except for their SAT II U.S. History scores, then of course the one with the 800 would win out over the 790. But that is never the case. That ten point difference is not going to make or break anyone: any other difference between two applicants is bound to be of more significance and import than a ten point difference on an SAT subject test.

And no, you should not retake your 760. You should not retake a 35. You should not retake your 2350. There are more important things to life and to your application!

And to people who may comment that I say this having no worry since I have an 800, know that I scored a 780 on Bio-M last year, and did not think twice about retaking!

When should a student ever retake a 790, a 35, a 2350? Damn, you misbubbled. Guess you’re not suitable for Yale. Ha, I realize it’s more than that, but the gain from a perfect score compared to those situations is negligible IMO.

I am really worried after I got my Score (740)…is that still in the range of getting a 5 on the AP test the following week? Or is it a lost cause? I write fairly good essays.

sophomore: Yes. I know someone who got 700 on the subject test and a 5 on the AP test. It doesn’t guarantee that you will get a 5, but it doesn’t mean you won’t either… if that makes sense.

And I only got a 710 on it… I really don’t want to retake though… If I want to major in math (and I got 800 on Math IIc), would they care much that I got a 710 on the history? Or should I retake?

IMHO they use SATs like MITChris said on the MIT forum: To predicr your grades. If they have the average first year math grade the people who got 800s on say, math IIC, and its just an eeny weeny bit higher than those with with 790, It wouldn’t make a difference. I don’t really think they look at them much for admissions decisons beyond their great predictive value for FYGPA (Which is quite a lot). These schools could admit lots of people who would make close to 4.0s; It’s not all they’re looking for.

Is there a reference chart for the predictive FYGPA based on SAT II’s you could link here (from any college)? This seems like it could potentially be the most important source for determining whether or not one should retake an SAT II.

There’s one for UC, but its really long. Just type in UC, SAT, and FYGPA and you should find it.

It’s not a HUGE predictor, but you should try to stay in the range of a school’s scores. EX, a sub-700 sat math II would look very bad on an MIT app. It really depends on the school and the classes.
