May commencement- attend the main one or for graduate students only?

There’s a main one that starts early in the morning and there’s one just for engineering graduate students in the afternoon. I don’t want my family to sit through the entire thing so I’m thinking of only attending the one for graduate students. Is there anything missed out on by skipping the main university ceremony?

You should ask your family what they’re interested in. I know for me, I was pretty much uninterested in attending my various graduations, but I knew it meant the world to my parents.

Please, please ASK YOUR FAMILY, as racinreaver advised. Maybe you don’t want your family to sit through the entire thing (because you don’t want to?), but they may see it very differently. Speaking as a parent, my son’s Graduation Day was the pay-off for those many years that my husband and I had lived on mac&cheese and drove 15-year-old cars. We were damn well going to enjoy all of it!!

If you have to choose one, pick the one with a better commencement speaker :P
