I am a transfer student from the School of Visual Arts NY, attending The CUNY New York City College of Technology. I took out a subsidized federal Perkins loan for $2,000 set to be disbursed within the first two weeks of March. The technological equipment I wish to purchase with it is on sale now but I need the loan in order to purchase it. Will the office of financial aid allow me to schedule an earlier disbursement date in order to buy my equipment? Is this something CUNY financial aid offices are allowed to do? I cannot ask now since they are closed.
Probably not. These loans are disbursed by the federal government to your school. You have no control of the disbursal date.
In addition, the school needs to receive the money, and pay any to billable costs, and refund any overage to you.
Any chance you could borrow the money from a relative?
When does the sale end? Also, look online…we have found that often sale prices can be found there.
You could contact the CUNY office and ask…but that won’t be until Tuesday.
Loan disbursement dates are set based on federal regulations and institutional policies. Although you can ask, I very much doubt you will be able to get an earlier disbursement. I agree with @thumper1 - you will either need to borrow the money or try to find a low price once the money is in hand.
