a crazy story. alan keyes threw his daughter out of the house because she is a “liberal queer” and is now, refusing to pay for her tuition to go to Brown

a choice quote from the washington post for those who don’t want to register

"She says she was told to leave her father’s apartment and not to expect any money toward attending Brown University, where she was admitted but deferred matriculation to spend a year teaching in southern India. “In my father’s view, financing my college would be financing my politics, in a sense,” Maya says, “because I plan to be an activist after college.”

I find it funny how Christians can focus so deeply on such small parts of the Bible, and not see the overall picture, the tenets held by the man that the religion is named for, tenets of deep compassion and acceptence.

Again very true. But it’s also true that certain liberals also focus on the trees instead of the forest. I’ve dealt with liberals that push “openmindedness”, as long as it has to do with liberal ideas. Any mention of conservative politics and they become just as closeminded as any fundamentalist can be. This annoying lack of tolerance happens on both ends of the spectrum.

Therein lies the problem - Mr Keyes probably instilled in his daughter a very strong sense of principles while raising her. Sadly, the principles she has developed contrast sharply with his own. But she tried to open a dialogue, to reach out, and he has shut her down and alienated her.

But, uh… veganism, anarchy, and antiabortionism, along with the quote, “cherishing the beauty inherent in each member of the human race” (from her xanga)?

her dad is alan keyes (the former presidential candidate) who recently got recruited by the republican party to run a ludicrous campaign against barak obama for the illinois senate

in the world of politics he stands out as one of very very few vocal black conservatives

As a left-wing Democrat, even I am rather suspicious of this. Some questions that came to my mind when I heard about this:

She says her parents discovered she was gay two years ago (at the end of HS) – why have they decided to toss her out of the house now, after they have been supporting her for two years?

While I can understand why she actively worked for her father’s campaign (out of love for her father), why did she continue to work and be supported by his foundation AFTER his loss to Barack Obama, including living in an apartment they paid for? Why not get a REAL job, even if it’s not an exciting one, if your father’s politics are so abhorrent to you, after his campaign is over?

A possible scenario I can see (what may REALLY have happened) – her parents found out she was gay two years ago, but have continued to support her (of course, probably while pressuring her to find God, etc). However, now she has lost her cushy job (and apt) with her father’s foundation (supposedly the foundation was unhappy that she went to an anti-Bush event). He has been known to have $$ problems, and perhaps he told her he can’t fund her Brown tuition. So she is angry and leaves, claimed he threw her out in order to get publicity and attention, and get people to come forward to help her financially (which is exactly what is happening). So to everyone out there, she portrays it as “my parents threw me out b/c I’m gay, they hate gay people, etc.” This riles up all the gay activists, and she gets sympathy and (more importantly) $$ help.

Her parents (and I am no fan of her father’s) have had the good grace not to make any comment beyond “my daughter is an adult and her activities have nothing to do with my political career.”

I hope Brown at least has the sense not to give her financial grant $$. If so, are they doing the same for other, less famous kids whose parents won’t pay tuition?

I guarantee she’ll end up at Brown, regardless.

Either someone will pay or the university will foot the bill. All publicity is good publicity. I beleive the AP article mentions Brown by name.

The only reason they might not is if they’re in the process of trying to distance themselves from their uber-liberal reputation. Basically, not likely.

Reminds me of the Famous Atheist, Madeline Murray O’Hara disowning her son when he became a Christian.
And as I recall, she was anything but discreet about it.

It’s nice that she recognizes she is being helped based on who her father is, but I would have a lot more respect for her if she were prepared to get a real job, and not just desperate to attend an ivy league school. I suppose she’s too good for a state school, like others who are accepted to top schools but can’t afford tuition often have to settle for? Now she thinks Brown should be giving her handouts. I hope they don’t, because plenty of other people seem to be willing to. Brown is known for poor financial aid – if they can scrape up funds for her, why not for the kids for truly needy families who get crappy finaid packages from Brown?

IMO, she’s chosen to simply ride on the fact that her father is a famous conservative, and the liberals are buying into her strategy because of some sort of “revenge satisfaction” against ultra-conservative Alan Keyes (who has never been elected to anything, BTW, so as a liberal I don’t worry too much about his political clout).
