I don’t think we’re allowed to link to Facebook pages, but there’s a new Bloom County strip on Berkeley Breathed’s Facebook page today. And there’s an article in Salon that suggests Donald Trump might have inspired the return. http://www.salon.com/2015/07/13/bloom_county_is_returns_thanks_to_donald_trump/
“Bloom County” and “Calvin and Hobbes” vied for first place in my heart back in the 1980s. I’m not on Facebook, but if that’s where Mr. Breathed is going to publish “Bloom County” … maybe I’ve been wrong about Facebook.
I loved bloom county, especially Bill the Cat…actually, Bill the Cat reminds me a lot of Donald Trump, including the way his fur looked.
So many great characters in Bloom County - Opus, Milo, Portnoy the groundhog, and my favorite, Binkley. And there were those epic Trump take-downs. Bill the Cat for president!
Thanks SO much for sharing! Breathed was a student at UT-Austin, publishing in the Daily Texan when I was a journalism student there, so I go WAY back with him.
His Facebook post announcing his return already has over 44,000 likes and 14,000+ shares. The cartoon has 63,000+ likes and 41,000+ shares.
David Letterman did another Top 10 list recently and joked that the biggest mistake of his life was retiring right before DT ran for president this year. DT, if nothing else, is mobilizing people.
I have had more conversation about national politics early that normal because of DT. In fact, I had a student in my office today. I was helping her with course material and somehow the conversation turned to what DT said about Mexico. Oh, I remember. She asked me what my wife’s nationality was and after I told her I asked her what her nationality was (Mexican it turns out).
So, I asked her what she thought about DT. She doesn’t like him and she was very offended by his comments. The point it, DT, if nothing else, is bringing attention to national politics earlier in the cycle than normal and if he brings Breathed back that would be a boon.
I honestly don’t remember the characters names from BC but I dod remember that strip having some serious depth and going places that made me think. I’d love to see him return with the same characters.
I still have my Opus stuffie.
