MCAT - Writing Section? How much weight?

I just got my MCAT score back, and I’m pretty happy with my numerical score, but not sure what happened with the writing section. (P:12 V:10 B:12 W:M = 34M)

So, I scored really well on all the numerical sections…but for some bizarre reason, my writing score in the bottom quartile (even after practicing several samples prior to the test). Usually writing is an area where I stand out.

I’ve heard that most US med schools don’t care about the writing score, and only use it as a tie breaker if they have two applicants with identical scores. Is there any truth to this?

On the otherhand, I’m really proud of my personal statement, and it is easily the most polished compositiion I’ve ever written…will admissions consider my personal statement as a better indication of my writing?

My GPA is fairly competitive, at 3.58 in biological engineering and some pretty cool ECs.

Do you think the low writing score is anything to worry about? I’m assuming it isn’t weighed anywhere near as much as the other MCAT sections?

Basically none. I’m not sure they’d even use it as a tiebreaker. Plenty of other places (essays, interviews) in which to do that. Personal statement does matter – a lot.

You’re fine. A M isn’t great but unless it’s obscenely low, it’s not going to impact your chances.

Cool, thanks a lot! Now I can celebrate my score.

Haha, considering my first MCAT practice score was a 24, I’m very happy with the 10 point increase.
