[Architecture Program](<a href=“http://magazine.mccormick.northwestern.edu/sp2008/Architecture_Program.html]Architecture ”>http://magazine.mccormick.northwestern.edu/sp2008/Architecture_Program.html )

Chicago has long been at the forefront of architecture and building, overcoming swampy soil and raging fires to become the home of groundbreaking skyscrapers and great American architects like Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at McCormick will build on that tradition by offering a new concentration in architectural engineering and design beginning in fall 2008.

The program will help prepare engineering students for building industry careers as architects, structural designers, builders, project managers, and developers. It will provide students with a broad understanding of building systems and design, give them the ability to communicate and collaborate with architects, and introduce them to issues in sustainability and green design.

Julio M. Ottino, dean of McCormick, who spearheaded the development of the program, saw an opportunity to combine Chicagos architectural strengths with the strong design initiatives at McCormick. Given the citys prominence in architecture, I felt it was important that Northwestern be part of this world, he says.

It’s not an accredited school of architecture, but more like a fast track to a Masters of Architecture for an Engineer. As someone who has variously worked with and cohabited with an Architect, I’m excited to see this program.

Thoughts?

so can major and get a degree in architecture?

I think you can major in civil engineering with a concentration in architecture- it’s not an accredited school of architecture, as I said, so you wont be qualified just with that degree to apply for an architect’s license.
