McDonald's HACER Scholarship - Financial need impact?

Hello,

So, I am deliberating whether or not I should put in the amount of time required to completing the HACER scholarship and ask my teacher for a recommendation. I have this lil problem because I noticed financial need is factor in evaluation for who receives a scholarship. Of all schools to which I have been accepted (one of which is known for having GENEROUS FA), I have been offered zero financial aid money - that should give a glimpse of what my FAFSA looks like.

Still, my family cannot comfortably afford paying full tuition at whatever school I go to, so I am really depending on scholarship money. If I could get this HACER Scholarship, it’d be great! But if lack of financial need (which it seems I don’'t have) keeps me from receiving the scholarship, I would much rather save myself the stress of meeting a fast-approaching deadline and scrambling to write a bunch of short answers and fill in my application.

In an honest opinion - how much would me not having a lot of need affect my competitiveness for this scholarship, even if I had a pretty strong application?

Thanks for bearing with me.

You can apply and see…but if your financial need is zero dollars on schools costing $60,000 or so…and financial need is considered…well…

Has anyone heard about semifinalist status. Yesterday was supposed to be the notification date but son hasn’t received an email, nor does the portal show any changes. My guess is that means he didn’t move on but we thought he’d hear either way.

I haven’t heard anything back from them, either. I would think that they’d at least send some kind of notification for those who weren’t selected, though.

Wow, strangely enough I JUST got a letter from them! Rejected sadly ):

I was rejected as well :frowning:
received an email on the 20th.
Had a lot of good ECs, 1500 on the SAT, 3.7 UW GPA and a W GPA of 4.03, however my financial need was low to none. I’m assuming that the scholarship mostly looks at one’s financial situation. Hopefully I provided some insight to those who’ll apply in the future. Congratulations to those who were selected as Semi-Finalists, and good luck to those who apply in the coming years!

I definitely think it has something to do with financial need. I got an email about making it to the semifinalist’s phase and my stats are WAY lower than that. 1080 SAT/22 ACT and 3.4 GPA, but my financial need is greater since my EFC is 0.

Does anyone know how many semi finalist are chosen?

Anybody receive anything yet? FAQ says we should hear something today

Nope, not yet… It’s already 9pm and I haven’t heard back. Not sure if it’s a bad sign…
