McGill BCom or UBC pre-comm?

Hey,
I can’t decide between McGill BCom or UBC Bcom (starting in pre-comm), where do u think I should go?
I am really undecided between both, please help me.

Where do you live? Go to the one that’s farthest away! :D

I live in South America and both of them are far away from home…I think that my question is, it is really worth to start precomm in UBC if u have a Bcom offer in McGill?

what is pre-comm?

ubc is so pretty! i believe ubc’s commerce program is superior to mcgill’s, also according to my friend who goes there, there are limitless co-op opportunities at vancouver, and UBC is right in the middle. as for mcgill, your chances of a co-op are considerably less and none if you can’t speak french.

do you think that UBC is well known in the US (as known as McGill)? I have heard that UBC’s reputation is growing while McGill’s is decreasing, but I am not sure about this…

I tried to research both the universities, from the US perspective. McGill won hands down. It sends more students for graduate studies in the top universities including HBS, Stanford, Wharton. Even the potential employers, in New York and Chicago (the two cities where I have reasonably good contacts in the Management Consulting and IB/IM) I found McGill and Queen’s are considered on par with the top schools in the USA.

The UBC campus is indeed located in one of the most beautiful areas in Canada and if that is a major consideration, then …

Vancouver is very beautiful when it is sunny, but it most often not sunny. I suppose you begin to appreciate the different tones of gray in the sky vs the water vs the soil in time, but that requires an evolved emotional maturity that I struggled with.

If you are interested in US rep, go with McGill.

UBC is indeed getting a much much better reputation over the recent years. if you’re interested in co-op and pre-work, vancouver is a nice place for that.

however, both mcgill and ubc are fine schools and choose either one will do you well. you should look past the rankings and look into other factors like the environment.

I am so confused because weather is way better in UBC, but it would be so interesting to study in Montreal (TOO COLD) to learn French…and from what I have heard McGill has a better reputation in the US and I would like to go to grad school there…but in UBC I have a contact that can help me adapt to UBC while I dont know anyone in Montreal…but in Montreal I am going to start directly in Bcom…ahhh…it is so hard…

By the way I have looked info about how many students from each school go to the bests grad schools, but I havent found any info (either from UBC or McGill)…and I only found the common employers list and payment in McGill Bcom site…anyone has any info on common employers and how is the payment at UBC BCOM?

have you gotten in both schools yet?

yes I have

UBC’s main attraction school wise is it’s business and school of science. mcgill is more of an all-around school (although it’s got probably the best medical school in canada). if you’re going to commerce, i’d probably stick with UBC.

do u have any info of the UBC reputation in the US?

when dealing with the U.S, there are only three canadian schools that you should look at: McGill, UToronto and UBC. Waterloo should only be considered if you are going into engineering, since it’s a great tech school. other than that, most schools in canada have absolutely little to no recognition at all (sorry queens and uwestern ontario students!)

however, any of the three schools i mentioned before is fine in terms of reputation at admissions offices or job recruiters in the U.S. you should probably look other factors in the school, like specific major/program reputations.

yeah…u r right…well, I am very certain tha ubc’s commerce reputation is better than mcgill’s…I think I will ve going to UBC…but I am not sure yet

so, I am still thinking what would be the right decision between sauder and desautel, so do u know how is the reputation of this school in the us?

I had tried to get as much information as possible, about the brand appeal of the Canadian Universities in the USA. Somehow, everybody starts with McGill. And I am talking about people who are holdong very senior positions in Management Consulting and Investment Banking. In fact, when I tried to lead with the other names, the reply in most cases, was " Could be in the Canadian context".
