McGill, Maryland, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Chicago

Depends on what you’re planning on majoring in… if you’re looking for pharm I’d say Rutgers without a doubt. If you’re looking for French I’d say McGill.

Btw you asked you different questions, so I’ll answer them separately.

Where I’d go:

Chicago
Rutgers
Pitt
UMD
McGill

Prestige:

Chicago
Rutgers
McGill
UMD
Pitt

well, is money an issue??
bc McGill is a fantastic deal for the money.
if not, then I would go to UChicago, it’s awesome.

If I were to rank them, I would rank them in the following way:

 1. University of Chicago
 2. McGill University
 3. University of Maryland (any possibility of getting into the honors college?)
 4. Rutgers
 5. University of Pittsburgh

What are you wanting from college? what do you want to study?

My 1st son went to U Chicago and loved it. He is presently employed and lives with two former frat brothers (only 8 -9% of student body) in NYC. He found UChicago to be intellectual and fun. He formed friendships for life there. The Univesity of Chicago name is recognized by many people in his industry (finance) and U Chicago grads come out as very critical thinkers that appeal to many employers ( He got a BS in Math with a concentration in Stats). He has friends who are UChicago grads who are doing a myriad of things - law school, med school, othergrad programs, employed.
We just got back from visiting McGill University (had done the official visit last summer and wanted my D to see it in the winter to see if she still liked it). Walking around in the library gave us a feeling that was similar to U Chicago - serious students scattered amongst the stacks or having studious and not so studious converstions in the coffee house downstairs. Living in either of these cities will be VERY COLD. You’ve got to either like or accept or at least tolerate the cold.
Both of these cities are great - restaurants, museums, the arts, theater. Chicago has fantastic music - classical, jazz, blues, folk, whatever you like. Montreal has a very cosmopolitan feel everywhere. It will help if you speak French - My D loves the bilingual aspect about Montreal.
I hear that the University of Maryland has a great Honors College. Any chance of getting into that? This is a big school compared to U chicago so if you are not in the honors program, it might feel very big. Rutgers and U Pitt are very big too.
At U chicago, you will get an advisor during Orientation Week (actually 10 days) who will be with you for two years and will help you plan out your courses. I doubt you will get as personal attention at these big schools.

Try to do an overnight at these schools to get a real sense of students and life - attend a class of interest or a specific group gathering. It could make the difference for you.

Rebecca from The Apprentice (who should’ve won) went to Chicago for finance, too!

go to chicago.!!! if i was you, i wouldnt even think about other school…

i m just wondering…does montreal use french???

French is the official language of Montreal yes, but you can live there your entire life without knowing a word of French (though I wouldn’t recommend that). You need not know any to get into McGill, but if you go there and don’t learn at least a little bit then you’re missing something (I do believe you have to learn some if you do a PhD there, that is, you’ll probably have to pass a test consisting of translating a short paper in your field of study from French to English).

since theoneo brought up The Apprentice, Randal (the winner) went to Rutgers …
…and Oxford… and MIT…
but still Rutgers!

Rutgers for pharm or AnSci. Rutgers Cook College does a lot of research that you can get involved in as an undergrad.

true. Randal is the coolest. He started at rutgers and moved to oxford then MIT.
http://www.randalpinkett.com/about/resume.asp

Quick question. If you do really good at a school like UMD, rutgers, or pitt do you have a good chance at top grad schools(mainly business :D)

Pitt (it was my 2nd choice after Brown, I got free tuition)
the rest
Chicago (not my kind of place for UG)

When did you find out you got accepted by all these places already?

Chicago

Distant 2. McGill

Distant 3,4,5 The Rest

well in terms of prestige i look at the peer assessment score in the US News rankings. I mean that is the opinions on the school. UMCP has a 3.7 vs a 3.4 for Pitt and a 3.3 for rutgers. I don’t really think think that rutgers really passes either in prestige.

First, I heard from Pitt and Maryland. Then, I thought I got admitted by those two only. Then, I got rejected by MIT on Thursday (3 days ago). Then, I heard from McGill, Chicago and Rutgers on Friday (2 days ago). So, now, that’s all I applied. 1 reject, 5 admitted

Are you instate to either UMD or Rutgers? You probably got honors at both (though thats presumptuous) if you got into UChicago. If so, I’d think heavily about attending the state schools. (Though Rutgers is better  )

I turned down schools equal to or higher in prestige of UChicago (turned down Northwestern, JHU, UVA, and McGill) to choose Rutgers… if money is an issue and you plan on going to grad school, it’s something to consider.

Basically, I think RU is awesome and I’m basically the RU spokesman on the board, so obviously I’m going to be biased and support it haha.

Hey, all of them r giving full funding, hehe. So money is not an issue. So I was like ***? for MIT. Coz the others r even giving full fellowships, but MIT just rejected me. I am angry wif them…

Pretty impressive, man. If moneys totally not an issue, and all you care about is prestige (is that all you care about?-- thats’s what you asked in the first post) then just go for UChicago, I guess. I can’t really argue that RU has more prestige haha.

full funding? like scholarships? You heard from maryland already?

if money is not an issue i don’t think that anything on that list compares to chicago. are you waiting for any other answers because that is a wierd looking list of schools expecially if you had stats for chicago.

Yes, very weird, right? Yeah, I definitely know that!!! I was late for everything… Yes, everything… And I did the whole application process in a big hurry. So the list is very weird… At least, I could have put Stanford, UPenn etc. in the list. :(

Well, I also care about other things of course. For example, I know how strong each school is in certain areas like mine. But I know them… That’s why I am asking only about prestige here.

good luck at stanford and upenn then!
