McGill University Class of 2029 Official Thread

My kid, a US student, applied in mid-December to Faculty of Arts with a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 98/100 average, 10 AP classes (with all 5s and one 4 on the tests they’ve taken to date), and a 35 ACT. They included their first quarter grades when self-reporting. We check the portal regularly and have not been asked to provide a transcript or any updated grades. They also applied for a major entrance scholarship. They have not received a decision for either one yet. Have those who applied in December to Arts from the US received admissions decisions yet? I know they review in order of application receipt and admit from the top-down but I am surprised with these credentials that they have not heard yet. Is this normal?

How did you submit updated semester grades? There is no request for this in my kid’s portal so I’m unsure if we should submit them or how we would do so.

We submitted the first semester final grades, together with all other grades, in late January. It was not an update. If you submitted first quarter grades, then McGill has to request an update. There is no way to submit an update yourself.

Those are excellent grades, so I think McGill will make a decision soon enough. We received our response on Feb-11 (US student in NYC area). McGill accepts a good number of kids every year from my son’s high school, and about 10 enroll, so perhaps the school is a known quantity to the McGill admissions people? I have no other explanation for why your child has not received a response yet. Have you submitted SAT scores?

Hi! My son got accepted to Desautels and Arts&Science today! The waiting was too long though. :expressionless: He also got into UofT the day before. We are still waiting for decisions from US universities.

I got a request a few days ago to update my midterm grades for my Education in Global Contexts application. I already got rejected for Bach of Science (expected but was worth a shot). They never requested midterm grades for my science application. Does anyone know if this is a good sign?

hi! i am a US student and applied to science and arts on 10/30. i submitted my grades in mid november and was requested to update them last week–is that a good sign for admissions? i have a 3.96 UW gpa overall (1 b in junior year, straight As otherwise), APs and IB, and a 34 composite ACT–i do however fear that my pre-requisite grades are on the brink of the cutoffs with A-s so i’m getting a little scared :frowning:

Good luck to all!

Just an FYI, re: the budget challenges McGill is facing due to provincial policies (these pieces just came out this month):

https://www.montrealgazette.com/news/article744037.html

Budget cuts at McGill in response to cuts in government funding are real. But the McGill Daily has long been a muckraker with a strong tendency to fault the administration while never proposing a realistic alternative.

How long do people get their decision after you submit the requested midyear grade update from Mcgill. I just submitted the midyear grade update from Mcgill, and I’m wondering how quickly I can get my decision.

Oh, this is all over the Canadian news (not just the campus papers). It is definitely not the administration’s fault. It’s the fallout of Premier Legault’s policies. McGill is actually suing the Quebec government for the out-of-province tuition hike that was specifically intended to lower the number of anglophone students. (The higher education minister has been transparent about Quebec’s goals here; I hope McGill wins because this is actually against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.)

Instead of funding francophone universities properly, the province is also clawing back tuition revenue from the English-speaking universities and redistributing it to French-speaking ones. Deep Saini, the head of McGill, has been forthright about the financial challenges this will pose.

Last week, Quebec also announced a new cap on international students (separate from the federal cap on international students that started last year). Not sure how this will play out, but again, this instability is entirely of the province’s own making. This is all so unfortunate.

The good news for the time being is that although Quebec is now requiring that 80% of non-Quebec students at English universities be proficient in French by the time they graduate (estimated at a level 5, or about 5 French classes if you’re starting from scratch), so far there is no formal provincial exam that students will have to pass. Worth keeping an eye on, though.

Agreed!
McGill has had to reply to the tuition hikes by putting in place the Canada Award which is a $3000 scholarship a large group of out of province students receive. This was done by McGill so they continue to attract bright students from all over the country!
Unfortunately, the short fall is putting strains On McGill’s budget!
Hopefully with provincial election in 2026-some of this can be undone!

Did everyone have financial aid in there acceptance or did that come separate?

Finally got an acceptance to McGill in bioengineering. Whew! The wait was too long!

Commerce application says reviewed - decision pending. Your application is complete and currently in the greyzone. Has anyone else got this message?

Hey, I have also been on this status for about a month now. Can you tell me what program you applied for, when did you apply and whats your curriculum? I applied in mid january with british A Level curriculum

hey did you get any response? also when did you apply? and with what curriculum?

I applied in October or so for comp sci. idk what you mean by curriculum, if you mean GPA and standardized tests, I have a 3.8ish~ gpa junior year and a 3.9 so far in my senior year, with a 1450 SAT and a 31 ACT. I still have not gotten a proper response (besides reviewed - decision pending) and have instead committed to university of toronto. i am an international student from the usa.

How did things turn out for you? I hope well!
Applying this fall - same situation with one pre-requisite (physics) is B+ (A- is cutoff), and everything else As.
