Hello, I was recently accepted to both McGill University and Bowdoin College and am trying to figure out which would be the better choice! I plan on being a physics major while meeting all premed requirements. I understand that these two schools are vastly different, but I believe I would be able to do well at either one. I received no financial aid from either, and it appears that McGill is the cheaper option. Any thoughts, experiences, or advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
Bowdoin appears on an online list, “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs,” should this be of interest to you. Good luck with your decision.
McGill and Bowdoin are two extremely different colleges, They’re both amazing schools though! Go with the one that you feel like you will fit in best at
Hi, I am also trying to decide among McGill, Carleton, and Bowdoin. The deadlines are getting closer, and I am getting more and more worried. Did you make your decision?
McGill has grade deflation, and premed advising to us med schools will be limited. In addition, why would you prefer the huge, lecture-based classes there, to the interactive seminars that are the norm at Bowdoin (or Carleton)?
@MYOS1634, depends on whether money is a factor.
For some degrees (if full-pay), McGill may be less than half the price of Bowdoin or Carleton.
Plus the Canadian dollar is very weak. I don’t see much of a change going forward.
Saving money would be a legitimate reason but at the potential cost of never making it to med school
@MYOS1634, true.
No guarantee at a LAC either, though.
Odds at Bowdoin are very good - they’re very good with supporting their premeds. McGill 's odds are very low- not only are they not ‘good’ at supporting premeds, but they don’t. A large, Canadian university couldn’t care less about American med schools and their requirements. About 10% students are Americans, majoring in many things from arts.&science to agribusiness but not premed.
Bowdoin at least has a separate department for pre-health advising with one staff member. Bates has a much bigger pre-health advising department with a staff of three. Williams doesn’t even list one.
