“The versatile senior, who is headed to Princeton next fall, smashed the Naugatuck High School pool record in the 500 freestyle during a recent meet between the Greyhounds and Indians. McNamara, the reigning State Open 200 IM and 500 free champ, shaved two seconds off the old record, swimming the 500 in a blistering 4:36.

“The sky is the limit for him,” Pomperaug head coach Fran Pentino said of his star. “He’s continuing to work very hard. We know he will win and do his thing, but everything has to fall in line for him to have what we think could be a lights out season.”

McNamara was recruited heavily by Notre Dame, Virginia, Northwestern and Harvard before deciding on Princeton.

“He really likes Princeton, but it was a tough choice,” said Pentino. “Notre Dame was offering him almost a free ride. But even though the Ivy League doesn’t give athletic scholarships, that’s the place he wanted to go.”

Princeton traditionally has a very strong swimming and diving program. This year the men’s team came in second at EISLs behind Ivy powerhouse Harvard. The women’s team took its 18th Ivy League Championship this year.
