MD school help

I am a high school senior and I applied to Gannon and many other universities. I have a question if I gradusate from Gannon University what are my chances of getting into MD school vs my chances getting into MD school from University of Pittsburgh. Considering I do better in Gannon than in Pittsburgh?

The most important things are going to be your grades and MCATs. You are going to have to show the med school you can handle the rigors of medical training. You can certainly do that and get into med schools coming out of almost any undergraduate college. However, it is often advantageous to supplement your med school application, so that it stands out better, with things like doing undergraduate research, extra clinical shadowing/volunteering, and working with bigger name faculty for recommendation letters. This is where Pitt has an advantage, as it has some of the country’s largest and most advanced bioscience and medical facilities right on the undergrad campus. That allows it to provide greater opportunities to undergrads, but also makes it lot easier to do those extra things just from the convenience of them being physically located where all the undergrad stuff is taking place. You can certainly be successful at either school though, but whether the opportunities to do those other things overcomes your hypothetical about you doing worse at Pitt really depends on what you are able to accomplish (in things like research) and how much worse you are talking about doing (MCAT and GPA wise).

I have only one comment. HS senior has no reason to believe that he will “do better in Gannon than in Pittsburgh”. How do you know? Actually nobody knows. They have to attend both places and take the same classes to figure it out. Do not rely on this. Classes are very challenging at ANY place. You will have to work very very hard to get high GPA required to apply to Med. School, no matter which UG you choose to attend. You also will have to work very hard preparing for MCAT.

Why do you think you’d do better at Gannon than at UPitt?

Do you know if Gannon is good for pre-med students? Advising? Strong in sciences?

Does it have very many high stats kids, or would the science classes be “dumbed down” a bit because of the quality of students?

I think that you’d get a better pre-med education at UPitt unless Gannon is also strong in sciences.

Ask Gannon for a matrix of admissions to allopathic US med schools of their grads – NOT to Ross. You do not want to go out of country if you can help it.

If you look at IPEDS, you’ll see that Gannon’s largest single major is nursing, followed by 'health sciences, biology and then kinesiology. Of the top 4, only Bio would be considered rigorous enough for med school.

Can’t recommend Gannon for a premed wannabe.
