ME to Med School?

Hi,

I plan on going to either UT Austin or Texas A&M. I want to be either a ME or a ER Physician or General Practician Physician. I like cars, so ME is a good choice for me, but I also like Medicine/Science. I took a clinical rotations class in HS where I shadowed various doctors, and I really enjoyed it. But I am not sure which I want to do. Is it possible for me to do my undergrad. in ME then take the mcat and go to med. school?

Thanks

What does ME stand for?

Mechanical Engineering

Doing medicine requires a lot more than taking the MCAT. You need to take several years of classes in different subjects (In Texas they need 2 years of Biology, some biochem, 2 years of chemistry, 1 year of physics (all sciences with lab), one year of math, one year of english and probably psychology and sociology. Engineering usually requires 2-3 years of classes specific to engineering which means you need to have a clear plan and schedule the day you start college to meet all of the premed and engineering requirements.

Nothing prevents you from being a premed and ME other than proper planning if you want to graduate in 4 years.

Yes, it’s possible to do ME and go to med school. My son was a Chemical Engineering student and is in med school.

However, be aware that an eng’g undergrad can mean struggling to get a high GPA.

It appears that you’re going to end up at UTexas or TAMU (because your other schools are OOS publics and pricey). And, no OOS student should go to Berkeley as a premed!!!

How hard is it to get a high GPA in eng’g at TAMU or UT?

Do you know how much your family will pay each year? If they wont’ pay all of Berkeley’s cost, I wouldn’t bother to apply. And, as mentioned, an OOS premed shouldn’t go to Berkeley
