DS had a long, detailed dream last night - he robbed a bank with a gun, and was being chased by police. This is very strange. DS is kind and gentle, won’t even kill an insect (very involved in the philosophy of animal rights). He never does anything even slightly wrong.

It’s great that you think so highly of your DH, but I doubt he is so perfect that he has NEVER done anything “even slightly wrong.” Maybe he was grumpy one morning and had uncharitable thoughts about someone causing a problem while he was in line at the bank. Maybe the teller was rude to a sweet old lady and he fumed while in line to make his deposit. Maybe because he is such a kind, empathetic human being he feels anger when he hears the daily news reports of despicable human behavior. Perhaps his behavior in the dream is just his anger/frustration being directed at others. Maybe he has internalized all the recent news reports of police corruption and shootings of innocents, so they were chasing him in his dream.

I wouldn’t worry that it means anything too bad. Be glad that your husband is such a good guy, but dealing with normal human emotions in a way which harms no one.

Btw, I had dreams for many years that I was angry with my daughter, and I tried to beat her (yikes) and my hand never would connect with hitting her which made me madder. She and I had to laugh about it…I don’t even believe in spanking, so why I wanted to pummel my kid is beyond me!

But the rest of post stands. We all have internal conflicts going on, no matter how “good” we are. If we are resolving those through dreams rather than acting out, no harm no foul as far as I’m concerned.

It means nothing. Perhaps the cop/bank was the bad guy. Your son was a good guy and shot the cop. The cop could represent an establishment. I’m always interpreted my dream to tell me what my subconscious is thinking. I’m often right about my situation.

Well, since you asked … I did take a dream interpretation class.

So, in the Freudian sense, a gun represents the penis, and a gun in a dream can represent male potency/power. In the dream, he is exerting power, clearly, having used it to rob a bank. Having said that, one thing I learned is that there is the archetype of an object in the dream and then there is the personal connection to the object/feeling about the object. For instance, water usually is seen as representing emotion in general. However, I almost drowned in middle school, so, for me, water is quite treacherous. I never have a water dream that is about benign emotions; the water always is threatening.

The fact that you describe your ds as gentle would leave me to believe that the dream is about his angst surrounding some issue, and he is trying to exert influence over a situation. Using a gun would be an extreme way for him! The fact that the dream didn’t go well – he ends up being chased by the police – suggests he is conflicted about how to deal with the situation and worried about the outcome.

“Latent” dreams - unconscious and unintended versus “manifest”, etc. One thing he mentioned was that sometimes dreams are geared to enhance sleep, so an explorer on the expedition to the South Pole who was starving to death recorded dreams of feasts in his diary.

I would like everyone to know I used the anatomically correct word up there, not the slang, four-letter equivalent as those ****s would have you think!

I would guess that he may have read a story about a bank robbery in the news or seen a crime show on TV. Or maybe he saw police on the street and wondered what they were there for, or even was afraid he’d get stopped for speeding. . . Maybe he could use some money but can’t earn enough as quickly as he’d like. Or maybe he has had something stolen from him or is worried about that happening–even something like identity theft.
Most dreams that I remember, I can easily connect with something I did, saw, heard recently–usually the day before I had the dream. I don’t think they are a “message” or have significant, logical meaning. I think my brain is just cleaning out its junk file. Sometimes it is amusing how stuff from the day appears in a jumbled up story.

I could try to will a dream about…I don’t know, Robert Redford back in the day. Nope, not happening. But if someone whispered “purple elephant” to me while I was ignoring them while reading a fascinating article about Robert Redford back in the day with a 5 page color photo spread, I’ll have a dream about a purple elephant.

Thanks for all the thoughts! I like your interpretation, Youdon’tsay. He certainly is concerned about a number of issues where he feels powerless (animal rights, global poverty) and he has the usual HS student stresses (overload of work from AP courses, high-profile solo music performance coming up, did not get deserved and expected role in another musical group). But basically he’s a happy kid and the thought of him committing a crime is shocking.

The only thing we could think of was a humorous story we heard yesterday on Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me - about a bank robber who was caught because he’d complied with the teller’s request for 2 forms of ID. And a follow up joke about the robber getting back into line to open a new account with the stolen money. So bank robberies on the mind.

Not sure if this is supposed to be some off-color joke I just didn’t get, or simply a misspelling and some non-off-color joke I still just didn’t get.
