does subjective mean biased?
You’re mixing apples and oranges. Bias is a quality that people can have. Subjectivity is a quality that an impression or understanding can have.
An objective impression is one that is essentially in synch with the facts. I measure the height of a wall with my ruler. The ruler was designed well, and I use it correctly. My measurement may not be 100% accurate, but it’s still mostly objective.
A subjective impression is one that may be based on facts, but is also the product of interpretation. If I want to know how high a wall is, but I the only tools I have are my eyes, and I can see it only from a distance, then my “measurement” will be based on a lot of things I can’t control, such as my memories. Depending on the terrain and my distance from the wall, I may be off by a large percentage.
Impressions of people are almost always subjective. Our facts are limited. Our personal definitions of traits such as “friendliness” may be open to disagreement. AND our impressions may be affected by biases that we have toward race, sex, and so on.
So in that sense, bias can increase the subjectivity of an impression. Being able to anticipate our biases makes it easier for us to adjust our impressions and arrive at a conclusion that is more objective.
Note that many philosophers believe that objectivity is impossible. That may or may not be relevant to your situation.
That was very helpful… Thank you
