Meaningful gap year activites

What are Gap Year activities that are meaningful and help to remain competitive?

I will possibly apply during a gap year.

Working at a job to save money to pay for college is probably the most common type of gap year.

This is a summer program but there are others similar that are much longer.

Kids I know have gone abroad to learn a foreign language, traveled, worked and saved money, gone to cooking school, and hiked the AT, to name a few. And a combination of activities is fine.

Colleges know that for many kids, stepping away from academia for a year can give them perspective and purpose in a way that motoring through for more of the same cannot.

Any activity that helps you develop a sense of yourself – one you can articulate – helps. Many kids get accepted and defer for a year rather than applying during the gap year. If you plan to do the latter, make sure you check with your current school to see how you need to interact with them as a graduate so they can support you in your applications.

I’ve heard great things about this organization: https://www.fimrc.org/
Personally I would start checking off my bucketlist.
