Yes, I love the “fresh air” argument. As if our 19th century ancestors were spending their days indoors in the air conditioned splendor playing video games! Mine were eking out a living growing carrots and turnips (and every “housewife” had her chickens for “egg money”) which involved PLENTY of fresh air since nobody owned a car, most had never been on a train, and getting anywhere involved miles of walking, usually with a baby on your back!
Guess they do not remember what pollution was like decades ago. There was a reason that the EPA was created…
I mean, they could read some books, but …
Just having this conversation with my oldest kid who has been in the hospital for the past few days with a severe kidney infection. So scary for them and stressful as a parent to watch the suffering. No matter the age of our kids, it is terrible to see them not well.
We are so grateful for the medical expertise, medicines and technology available. And for the kindness and professionalism of the healthcare providers.
Sending you healing thoughts and praying for the wisdom of the medical team…
So different from my doctor, when I asked her about a titer. “You could just go ahead and get the shot, it’s about the same cost.” So I did.
Oh, I will be thinking of your child. I got a kidney infection when my kids were 1 and 3. I was hospitalized for five days. The pain was worse than childbirth. And yes, I would have died at 19 if antibiotics had not been invented. My aunt had the same condition and did die - at 15.
I know this thread is about measles and not my kid, but just wanted to say thank you to posters for their kind support.
Kid is recovering well and home with me for a bit. Everything looks great for a full (if slow) recovery.
Here in Oregon parents can also claim exemptions for religious or “philosophical” reasons.
The rate of non-vaccinated kindergarteners hit a new high last year. The non-medical exemption claims have increased by 25-30% compared to children entering in 2019 and is now just under 10%.
For non-medical reasons.
I’ve seen first hand, parents getting sucked into RFK’s Gish Galloping falsehoods; there were many parents during 2020-2022 at my kid’s high school that started sending articles from his website to other parents and to the school, citing “the science.”
“Philosophical reasons.” !!! That could literally apply to everyone. How horrible.
There’s a bill in Maine to allow exemptions for religious reasons again. Ugh. I’m hoping it doesn’t pass since the Democrats are in control of the legislature.
The outbreak in Texas does seem to be stimulating a rush for early measles vaccinations in 6-11 month old infants. However, overall vaccination rates for infants and toddlers up to two years old was only 80.5% in the study.
Officials say a person who was infected with the measles attended the Shakira concert at MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on May 15.
I was born in the late 1950’s and “supposedly” had measles.
I just signed up for an MMR tomorrow at CVS. D is due with her second child in August. I’m not taking chances with that baby.
Get yourself a DTaP too and maybe a shingles shot as you don’t want to get shingles and give the baby chickenpox.
My daughter’s friend had a baby and she asked her friends to get updated shots, and they did that for her. My daughter HATES shots but she did it for her friend.
I have had both Dtap and shingles vaccines recently.
Todays latest
" Health officials are sounding the alarm after three cases of measles were detected at Denver International Airport.
An infected individual arrived at the airport on a Turkish Airlines flight on May 13 and stayed in a nearby hotel for two nights, potentially exposing hundreds of patrons.
The Colorado Health Department also confirmed two additional cases of measles on the flight, Turkish Airlines Flight 201.
One was a traveler who was infectious during the flight and the other a young child under five years old who was likely exposed on the plane.
The first passenger contracted measles despite being vaccinated. The child was unvaccinated and is currently hospitalized, while the vaccination status of the third passenger is unclear."
Anti vaxer posts keep showing up in my Facebook thread. I skim through them occasionally. It’s just so scary what people are falling for.
It doesn’t engender confidence that the MAHA report has a number of invented studies cited. Yay AI
And apparently we don’t need a bird flu vaccine either.
But should the guidance be changed to include all people traveling or living in the US, given the outbreaks that have been happening in the US?
I don’t think that this has been mentioned here. So far in 2025 there have been more measles cases in Ontario, Canada than in all of the US. Measles outbreaks are widespread in some other provinces too.
" Since October, the province has reported a staggering 2,009 cases of measles associated with the current outbreak – more than all of those in the United States combined in 2025, and making Ontario the measles centre of the western hemisphere."
