When I got ( finally) my shingles vaccine the pharmacist suggested based on my birth date that I get a measles vaccine. My doctor agreed saying she’s actually worried there could be a shortage if there’s a real outbreak because our area is thought by the CDC to be one where there could likely be a big outbreak.
Have any of you gotten another measles vaccine recently?
My H just had a physical and asked his doctor about getting one. The doctor told him to go ahead and get one at the pharmacy, though I don’t think H has done it yet. I probably need to get one, too.
When I was pregnant with my D, I tested immune … three years later, when I was pregnant with my S, I was no longer immune. My pediatrician took extreme caution when I brought D for appointments while pregnant, and I was given an MMR almost immediately after my S was born. They took absolutely no chances. I would err on the side of caution, if your doctor thinks it’s a good idea.
I have had the measles, but when I started nursing school, they required proof of vaccine or titer, and it was just cheaper and less time consuming to get the shot. So far I haven’t been diagnosed with autism.
I had a titer a few years ago and was no longer immune. I got the mmr because they don’t separate them out. No autism for me either.
I also wonder about the chicken pox vaccine. My kids are the first generation for that one so I’m wondering if down the road some they should be tested to see.
My mom had measles as a kid, so no immunization. It didn’t stop her from getting diabetes, heart issues, or cancer. Her immune system her entire life was pretty low - esp compared to mine. She caught pretty much everything going around from colds to shingles including when she was the same age I am now. I had the measles vaccine along with literally all my classmates at school in the early 70s.
I had all of those diseases in the late 50’s/early 60’s as a pre-schooler–measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox. It’s my understanding that I have lifelong immunity but have not had a titer. The CDC says immunization is not necessary for those born prior to 1957. I hope they’re right!
I got both shots three years ago when I started volunteering in the hospital. My insurance did not pay for the titre but did pay for the vaccines. I figured if I paid out of pocket and was negative I’d need the shots anyway so just went ahead and had the shots.
I am tail end of baby boom, and had the misfortune of having measles, rubella, and mumps early on. I had chicken pox as a young adult, and it was horrible. But titers were positive for all of them in my early 40s. I’m sure the immunity is lifelong. People who didn’t have the disease, and haven’t had two doses post early 1970s, should probably get another dose of the MMR. So many people have refused to immunize their children, all across the country, that measles will soon get out of the small pockets in a few cities, and be all over.
Is there any harm to getting the vaccine if you don’t necessarily need it?
I can’t imagine my mom could find my old pediatrician records. I know I had all the recommended shots including chicken pox when my S got his shot! But apparently some immunity wears off?
Pretty sure I had measles and chickenpox as a kid (I’m an old guy) but I never had mumps… uh oh… I wouldn’t want to get it now, but the side effect of sterility wouldn’t be a major problem now.
The earliest measles vaccines were less effective than later ones, so those who got the earliest measles vaccines are recommended to get it again anyway.
Going on Tuesday @maya54. A family outbreak in our area was the “shot in the arm” required for me to, you know, actually pick up the phone. PS glad you tolerated the shingles vac well.
@surfcity – when I called the doc the protocol was to get titer then vaccine if necessary BUT first 1) inquire if insurance pays for titer 2) inquire if insurance requires doc or pharmacy vaccination. Our insurance says no to titer, yes to doc.
@parentologist – An aside – got chicken pox right before starting “real” job. Doc saw me Friday, said you’ll be okay. Went back Monday cause I wasn’t, and he called the other docs in to see. I was a mess, scarred, and delayed start date two weeks but grateful I didn’t start my new career being “that new hire” who exposed everyone to chickenpox. Can you imagine?
Also, anyone know what determines one vs two MMR doses?
Also, those who got the vaccine did you have any side effects?
