If I get a bachelors degree in mech. engineering & I decided later down the road that I don’t like it, would it be possible to go straight into a graduate school for architecture? I’ve heard that a lot of mech. engineers become civil engineers, so shouldn’t this be similar? I mean as long as I can develop a decent portfolio for the application process right?

You can do whatever you want. But I would strongly suggest that you make sure and get your mech engineering degree. Architects salaries and the housing economy go hand in hand and the future for construction does not look very promising.

It will probably take you longer than it would take for someone with an undergrad architecture degree. Like 3-1/2 years.
