Med School - bioengineering undergrad?

I’m going to the University of Washington this fall and can’t decide what I want to major in. I’m currently considering medical school after graduating, but I’m not sure what I should major in for that. Right now, I’m considering a biomedical engineering major. I don’t want to major in just biology because I don’t think that will help me stand out to top med schools. I’ve heard that it’s hard to earn a high GPA with a bioengineering major. However, wouldn’t it be just as hard to earn a high GPA in any STEM major?

UW has a top 10 undergrad bioengineering program which is one of the reasons I’m really interested in it. Should I major in bioengineering or something different?

Major in whatever you want. Medical schools don’t care about your major. They only thing they care about is your GPA and whether you have completed all med school pre-reqs.

Majoring in bioengineering will not make you stand out in any way to med school admissions officers. Nor will having a “difficult” major get you any forgiveness if you have a low GPA.

Your major should be based on what you want to work in if not medicine.

A majority of freshman premeds end up not going to medical school.
