I’ve read that this department is really competitive to get into, but I’ve also heard that it isn’t very respected. Does anyone have more insight into this??

I wouldn’t necessarily say that it’s competitive to get into. As long as you do the prerequisites and get the minimum GPA, then you’re automatically in. Even if you miss the GPA mark or something like that, you can still appeal and get in. So if you’re worried about getting into the department because it’s competitive, don’t be.

Is it known for being a good program?

There are better communication programs at other universities, like USC and UPenn. Honestly, MS is not that respected on campus like engineering or business. It’s thought of as a sorority girl major. As someone who has taken 2 MS classes (and is going to drop it as a second major), Berkeley’s MS program is too theoretical and the statistics of postgrads of this major are not good. I can’t find the link for them at the moment.
