Ok so I’m a freshman who is looking for an internship but I’m having a tough time (going to ask a few places if they would be willing to take me on unpaid).

But one thing came up a month ago and they are still looking for help. My state is one of the states that is considering passing a medical marijuana act. I agree with it and want to help out. Heck, I think marijuana should be legal since alcohol is arguably worse for your body than weed. (granted I’ve never smoked so I wouldn’t know).

Ok, so the internship is probably going to be unpaid which kinda bites since I’ll have to rent a place (but I think I can live with friends, they have a lot of room and I would cut down on their rent). But I’d still probably lose money.

Here is my issue, I am interested in a career in business and want to get a decent internship next year.

How will employers/other business view a medical marijuana internship? It doesn’t directly link to businesses (I got info from one of my political clubs I’m involved in) and I’m worried how people might view me.
I’ve never smoked but I think it should be legal and whatnot. I’m not a “pothead” but don’t really judge people that do smoke. But I know a lot of people do.
But what will employers and other businesses think?

My other alternative is trying to find a part time job at home, which would be kind of boring. Or I could do nothing and have fun for another summer, but meh.

Thanks!

such an internship doesn’t exist yet. Federal law now threatens these states from using THC this way.

Are you saying the internship is to work for an organization trying to get medical marijuana laws passed?

^

Sorry yeah that’s what I meant, working to getting a law passed in my state. So more of a political internship.

Thank you. I guess the basic answer to your question it will rub someone the wrong way. 70-75% of the population believe medical marijuana should be legal. And there is no doubt that some opposed will toss your resume. But it would be hard to quantify. With that in mind, I would feel safe saying 75% won’t care. That is about the best educated guess I can make.

ILYnow, the notion of being a ■■■■■ is so foreign to me that it never crossed my mind. It is so useless and shows how little a life the trolls have. Having said that I don;t mind giving an honest answer to a ■■■■■. What I prefer to do is prove a ■■■■■ a ■■■■■ when they act like they are giving legitimate answers to people who seek info. That is easier to do. You ask them to prove their assertions.

Seriously ILYN? you think if I was trolling I’d do something a little more outlandish, I didn’t think this was that far out there.

Thanks for the response geo. I’m leaning towards not taking it because it would be unpaid and I’d have to pay rent somewhere since it’s not in my hometown, I couldn’t just live from home. Plus my parents wouldn’t be thrilled either but that alone wouldn’t stop me. They looking for volunteers so I might just help out a bit.

Ehh may just tinker around this summer. A friend and I entered a business competition and won second place, so I may try to work on that some more, maybe get something going. Still might try to contact a couple more places about doing an unpaid internship.

Thanks

You’re welcome, coollege. But I do have a suggestion. Find a job (part time is acceptable) to pay your bills while you are interning.

To be honest, you are a freshman, you’d probably be better off taking summer classes (even at a state or community college as long as the credits transfer). Unless you really went to networking events, you will have a hard time finding a good internship. How is this internship business related? Besides, you do the marijuana “internship,” people they are going to think you do drugs.

My follow up is, why would you put a hardship on yourself to do an unpaid internship when it is more so volunteer work.

Edit: why go to businesses and randomly ask? You should use your university’s Career Services.
