Why is it that a University with so many undergrads (38,000) only produces 221 med school applicants whereas comparable institutions such as Ohio State, Michigan State, University of Illinois (Urbana Champaign), and University of Michigan are producing 290, 330, 421, and 660, respectively?

Are the sciences at Penn State respectable? Is it just that fewer students at Penn State want to become doctors? Is the pre-med program at Penn State too intimidating or difficult?

Please, people, especially science students at penn state…help me!

That’s not really much of a signifcant difference to base any claims off of. Penn State is well respected in the sciences. Although you can major in any subject to go to med school, the Pre Med major at PSU is a little rough weeding out some of them.

Penn State is also a top research and engineering school, so you have to consider that many potential doctors switch tracts after discovering other interests.

penn state also offers a med school program for 3 or 4 years. I know a handful of people in the accelerated med school program which works with jefferson university hospital in philadelphia, and these are all top notch student with ivy/honors college potential.
