That I am not sure about.
https://www.aamc.org/download/321508/data/factstablea23.pdf shows admission rates for applicants by GPA and MCAT score.
https://www.aamc.org/data/facts/applicantmatriculant/ has other applicant and matriculant stats.
I know a Phi Beta Kappa from UCLA with a near-top MCAT score, and a year of working in a medical setting, who applied to 9 med schools and was denied at 8 of them.
It’s tough. It shouldn’t be (we’re facing a doctor shortage in the near future) but it is.
Here’s wishing OP’s son success with his other applications.
My relative was given an award for being THE TOP graduate from Claremont for Math/Biology double major but still was put on waitlists (never cleared them) and had to reapply the next year. The happy ending is that he was admitted WITH a nice merit award that made his med school education VERY reasonable and he will be graduating debt-free!
There are too many unanswered Q’s for us to give a good answer.
What was his cum GPA
What was his science GPA (the cum GPA of all math, bio, Chem, BioChem, physics courses)
What were his Ochem grades
When did he submit his application to AMCAS
When did he submit his secondaries?
When did he take his MCAT?
Which med schools did he apply to?
Sounds like he had a VERY short list if he only applied to about 6…many kids apply to 15-30+!!!
HOw many med school interviews has he had?
WHERE did he apply?
Rule of thumb (not set in stone) but if you don’t have any interview invites by Thanksgiving, you will have an unsuccessful app year.
Applicants with qualified stats who have an unsuccessful app year either made some missteps or were from Calif or another “unlucky state”.
I know he has been in the honor society for the last four years in college his grades are wonderful. He did have the college send out his applications and I think they were late in doing so I am not sure if that hurt him or not I think he has a interview in Toledo next week.
I’ve heard it is also good to get the apps in at the earliest opportunity (when they are 1st being accepted) rather than waiting until just before the deadline). My relatives who got them in early were more successful than when they just squeaked in before the deadline.
I know he did apply at Neomed ,Toledo , Ohio State,Luisana I am not sure of the others. What do you do when your son does not want to take any of your advise?

Colleges do NOT “send out applications.” Maybe his college was late sending his transcripts? Or maybe late sending his Committee Letter?
colleges do NOT send out med school applications.
So far he has ONE interview invite?

Let him fail. He’s an adult. All you can do is give advice and it’s up to him to accept or ignore.
My niece ignored the advice given to get her AMCAS app submitted early. She’s a procrastinator and got them in around Sept…WAY TOO LATE. Got one interview and was wait-listed. She’s now in Pharm school.
What is his home state?? (Edit…see that home state is Ohio. If so, should not have applied to Louisiana)
Louisiana has two med schools and at least one doesn’t accept many/any OOS students.
If he applied to mostly OOS publics, then that is another huge problem.
“…his grades are wonderful…”
The sad part is that grades just being “wonderful” is not enough! My daughter with a GPA of 3.9 (in her second year in UCLA) feels that her chances are not that good (though has done plenty of other things such as having her name on 7 publications so far …) and keeps complaining that she should have gone to a less competitive school!
@mom2collegekids, the OP lives in Ohio. Ohio has quite a few medical school. Ohio State, Cincinnati, Toledo, NEOUCOM, Wright State, Case Western, I think I got them all. Ohio University has an osteopathic school.
OP, I suggest you PM @mom2collegekids all of your S’s info. Maybe she can help you. Also S may know what he’s doing but isn’t communicating that to you effectually. Med school admits are really hard and may take a while. It’s easy to feel out of control. We parents worry.
@uclaparent9 That is a common feeling when attending a top Calif school or another top school. Calif applicants have it very tough…often much tougher than other states’ residents’ applicants.
We try to steer premeds away from Calif schools, especially if not a Calif resident.

I would be happy to help if it becomes necessary for him to reapply. In the meantime, for this app season, all you can do is wait and see. Maybe if he’s unsuccessful this year, he’ll be open to advice for next time.
Sounds like he has one interview so far (Temple med, which is private). The rule of thumb is to apply to all of your instate publics and then select privates from the rest of the country (using stats and LizzyM score as a guideline).
It sounds like he submitted his app to AMCAS late and his app list was too short.
It’s not too late to apply to osteopathic med school for this application cycle. DO schools’ application & interviewing season runs longer than does the season for MD schools.
Here’s the link to AACOMAS (the application service for DO med schools)
http://www.aacom.org/become-a-doctor/applying
I agree with Mom2–applied late plus applied to too few schools–that’s an excellent recipe for not getting accepted anywhere.
Sorry @mom2collegekids, I didn’t put what I meant correctly. You asked a bunch of questions as to scores and what I meant is if OP wanted to share those, maybe it would be better to pm you so that you could interpret them for her. Not for you to give advice on med school admissions but maybe she didn’t want to post all those grades and scores on a public forum. Not that they mean anything to me but I am sure they do to you.
In this house…TWENTY applications to medical and DO schools were done…and they were all submitted within a few weeks of the opening of the application cycle.
If the kiddo doesn’t get accepted this year, find something significant to do in the interim, and reapply next year…looking carefully at the list of schools. One thing we were advised to look at VERY carefully is whether schools actually accept students from other states…or give preference to applicants from within their own states. Many schools accept the vast majority of their students from within their own state…especially public universities.
[quoye] think he has a interview in Toledo next week
[/quote]
@mom2collegekids interview is at Toledo next week…which is instate for this applicant.
To the OP…did your son apply to ALL of the medical schools in Ohio? Any of the DO schools?
Yes! Thanks for the correction. For some reason I thought his interview was with Temple. You’re right.
<<<
My son said his MCAT score was to high to apply at a DO school is this true?
<<<
I’m not sure what he means. It’s not too high to get into a DO school. Is he thinking, “I have a high GPA and a 34 MCAT, so that’s high enough that I should be able to get into a MD med school.” Sometimes kids with strong stats will think that way.
He may also think that if he reapplies to an instate public MD school that he’ll get in AND not have to pay the higher cost of a DO school.
