Medical School

my son finished four years of premed took the mcat and scored a thirty four and was denied direct entry into Neomed in Ohio.

Did he apply anywhere else?

Can he do medical research for a year and reapply?

Yes, my nephews were urged to cast wide nets and apply broadly for med school. One who was put on several wait lists was urged to do research for a year and reapply. Both are currently med students but the times when they were applying and awaiting responses caused great anxiety for them and all of us who love them. Good luck to your S.

What is your question?

Everyone I know seems to get deferred and then spend a year working, researching, or doing a masters program and then reapplying

I don’t know all the details, but I know of a first year med student, an ivy league equivalent alum with very good MCAT scores and two years research experience, applied about 12 places, was denied at about 10, waitlisted at 2, and got off the waitlist at one.

Yes he did apply at other colleges he was denied at another one I wondered if a admissions consult would help I know they are expensive and that is a good idea about the research I dont know how well the interviews went.

So denied at 2, what about the other ones he applied to?

What was his overall GPA? What about his STEM GPA?

Did he have any leadership positions and/or research experience? Did he do any doctor shadowing or have any experience in a clinical setting (job or volunteer)?

There are several other factors that affect acceptance or denial besides the MCAT score.

They only admitted 35 direct entry students last year. 22 were Ohio residents - do you live in Ohio?

He said he did apply at six other colleges I don’t know the results of those yet,he did shadow are family doctor for two months he did volunteer work at a local hospital for about six months he was also the dorm supervisor at his college.I am not sure what his overall GPA is and he is currently tutoring at the college .What I don’t understand is the college he attends I think is a partnership.

Yes we live in Ohio

If you are put on a waitlist how long does it take to get into the college

My son said his MCAT score was to high to apply at a DO school is this true?

A consultant might help next year, but this year he’s going to have to wait and see. Did he take advantage of whatever pre-med consulting is offered at his college?

What’s his major, his GPA, his science GPA?
Yes he needs to do research this year and continue with experience.
His college has a partnership with neomed - but does he meet the criteria?

He said a couple of his professors did mock interviews with him.

Med school admissions are tough, even for tippy top students. You are competing against other elite kids and there just aren’t that many spaces

I understand Thank you!
