I’m currently a freshman in college (sophomore status due to AP credit in high school) with a Biology major. For a while, I aspired to become a surgeon (unsure what kind yet) ever since I first dissected a frog in middle school and I’ve volunteered in several hospitals every summer since my sophomore year of high school so I know what kind of environment I’m dealing with.
The problem is, I also like to keep up with pop culture and I find that I’m pretty good with working with social media and I even run a YouTube channel and Instagram account with a good following (about 110K followers/subscribers in total). Because of this, I’ve started moving towards wanting to work within the entertainment industry after attending a couple music award shows. I loved the fast paced environment and it was fascinating to watch what went on behind the scenes when commercials were rolling, whether it be the stage crew or film crew. I’m just not sure if I truly want to pursue that path.
I’m a hardworking student and I had a 4.2 weighted GPA in high school, but I’m not sure which path to follow. I don’t want to commit to medical school, only to find out it’s not the career for me, which would lead to a waste of money and time. At the same time, I don’t want to turn to the entertainment field, only to find out I’m not competitive enough or I don’t have enough networks to make it, then realizing I could have used this time to get into medical school since I know becoming a surgeon would take YEARS.
I considered majoring in Biology and probably minoring in Communications, Film Production, or Multimedia Production, since I don’t think I could handle double majoring or switching majors completely. What should I do??? (And yes, I know how completely different these fields are haha)
