I am sorry to sound daft to those of you in the know, but what exactly is a meet schedule/in what context is it used in recruiting?

Just yesterday, my S, a Junior, was asked by 2 coaches what his Summer meet schedule was. He came and asked me what this meant as it is not a phrase that we use here. Whilst it seemed obvious as in ‘a list of the meets you are swimming this Summer’, the question has nevertheless thrown both of us because it is not as if either of them can just hop on a plane and come and watch him - I wouldn’t have thought.

Besides, he always lets them know how he does at his big meets (and his times are all on our country’s official swimming database, and the results are also very public in any event because of some of the ‘big guns’ that also attend). Further, they have access to his swim videos and so can see how he races, so we are thinking that knowing about how he does couldn’t be the motivation behind the question. Truly baffled here…

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated. It is just that in the context of his dealing with these Coaches, it seemed an odd thing to ask.

Researchmum - I think the intent behind the question was probably to see if your son would be competing at any of the meets the coaches planned to attend this summer.

Thanks Varska. I would have thought so too, but each coach knows we live in the UK, and like I said, I’d be most surprised if they were planning to come and watch him over here. Apart from this odd reference, the rest of their responses were individual and detailed. It doesn’t seem to therefore make sense to respond individually, but then add an unnecessary ‘canned’ response at the tail end. Maybe my S just has to put this down to a difference in approaches as opposed to him missing the meaning of life :-S

Assume you don’t live in US but your S is interested in swimming here? There are meets that are open to international swimmers happening this summer - Grand Prix series and US Open come to mind. Perhaps they were asking if per chance he was coming so they have an opportunity to meet him when NCAA rules permit. Or perhaps they simply forgot he is an non-US swimmer???.. :-)

Haha SDM, perhaps so … S responded as he and I discussed and asked if that was what they wanted. One of them apparently already got back to him to say yes. For a short while, I wondered if this might be one of those US/UK cross-purpose communications, but it seems S and coaches might all still be on the same page after all - even if only just so. Thanks.

Many of the college coaches will be at senior nationals/ junior nationals this summer and they try to meet as many recruits as possible, which is why they asked about your sons schedule. If he is not planning on swimming these meets then he should send the coaches all the info about the main meet he is planning to swim including an event list.
