"EXETER — Three days after graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy, Emma E. Glennon will be awarded a National Gold Medal at Carnegie Hall.

Emma, 17, a Greenland resident, not only has received national academic recognition but also is a nationally-recognized artist whose oil painting will be shown in a special exhibit at the World Financial Center’s Courtyard Gallery in June. Her Gold Medal painting has been selected out of more than 165,000 works of art submitted this year to the 2010 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program, and will be featured in a traveling exhibit of exemplary works."
[Harvard-Westlake’s Nicole Hung is headed to Princeton by way of Oak Park - Los Angeles Times](Harvard-Westlake's Nicole Hung is headed to Princeton by way of Oak Park)

"Before she entered preschool, Nicole Hung’s family had picked out her university. It would be Stanford, her father’s alma mater.

To get her ready, they took her to watch Stanford’s Rose Bowl appearance against Wisconsin in 2000. And she saw Stanford star Casey Jacobsen’s buzzer-beater against top-ranked Duke later that year at the Pete Newell Challenge.

Hung, 17, a Harvard-Westlake senior, has certainly excelled in the classroom and on the court. She has a 4.2 grade-point average, plays the bassoon in the school symphony and her tennis game is strong enough to play on a Division I team, her coach says.

But it’s on the basketball court where the 5-11 forward commands attention. Hung led her team in scoring (17 points a game) this season, and on Wednesday she poured in 25 points as Harvard-Westlake beat Antelope Valley in a Southern Section Division 4AA quarterfinal playoff game. On Saturday, Harvard-Westlake (28-1) plays Oak Park (19-9) in the semifinals in Sherman Oaks." (continued)

The Nepean Raiders’ leading scorer was named the Scholastic Player of the Year by the CJHL at their year-end awards on March 2.

“I think that’s one that I take the most pride in because it talks about not just sports but it also gives you academic credit as well,” he said.

“I’ve gotten my likely letter, which means that providing I’m a good citizen and I get my official acceptance letter, so it’s not 100 per cent official. But just the fact that I have a chance to go there (to Princeton) is kind of unbelievable." (continued)

Andrea Kropp returned to Belmont Plaza in Long Beach looking to care of some unfinished business and the Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Canada Flintridge senior made up for lost time by posting the top qualifying times in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

The Princeton-bound Kropp, who didn’t compete in the Div. I prelims and finals last season to focus on club swimming, clocked 1 minute, 1.86 seconds in the 100 breaststroke and 2:00.63 in the 200 IM. Kropp won the Div. II title in the 100 breaststroke as a freshman and finished second in both events at the Div. II final in 2008.

“To win (a title) as a freshman and to come back as a senior and possibly win again would be incredible,” Kropp said. “I’m so excited for (finals).”

Kropp will battle Rattler Swim Club teammate and Chaminade of West Hills senior Meghan Hawthorne in the 200 IM. The USC-bound Hawthorne, the defending champion, qualified second (2:02.30) and posted the fastest time in the 100 butterfly (55.95).

In all, team members Evan Hollander of Crescent Hill, John Tamplin [Princeton '14] of Indian Hills and Brendan Croom and Vishnu Kadiyala, both of The Woods of St. Thomas off Brownsboro Road, answered about 86 percent of the 100 questions correctly at the April 24 contest at the National Press Club. . . .
"THE WOODLANDS The John Cooper School awarded diplomas to 81 graduating seniors during Friday nights commencement ceremony in the schools gymnasium.

The Class of 2010 was led by Valedictorian Rachel Zambrowicz, who will enroll at Princeton University in the fall. There, the 18-year-old will compete on the womens diving team.

Zambrowicz has yet to pin down a major, knowing only she wants to pursue a science-related degree. However, she is certain as to why she chose to continue her education at the New Jersey-based Ivy League school.

Princetons approximate 5,000 undergraduate students and 2,500 graduate students represents a fraction of the enrollment found at most major universities. Its the sort of learning environment Zambrowicz says she grew accustomed to at the John Cooper School, which she attended from the fifth grade on."

"For Winters Mill’s Erin McMunn, winning a second girls state lacrosse championship meant something quite different than winning the first.

After the No. 6 Falcons rolled over Loch Raven, 19-8, for the Class 2A-1A crown Tuesday at UMBC Stadium, the junior thought about what it meant to win two titles in three years.

“I think it’s just as exciting to try to keep the legacy going and build a legacy vs. getting your first one, [when] you’re like, ‘Oh, this is really cool,’ and then you start showing … that we’re trying to build something here and keep it going,” McMunn said.

McMunn was one of three Falcons to finish with seven or more points as Winters Mill polished off an 18-1 season with 16 straight wins."

"When Gene Katsevich attends his graduation ceremonies tomorrow at the UCF Arena, the Oviedo High student will already know his way around campus. For the last year, he has been taking all of his courses at UCF through an “early enrollment” program, earning both college credit and fulfilling his high school graduation requirements.

But his preparation for college extends far beyond his orientation to college-level classes and campus life. Katsevich, the 2010 class valedictorian and “Most Outstanding Senior,” also possesses an extraordinary commitment to excellence that earned him perfect scores in his PSAT, SAT and every one of his eight Advanced Placement class exams, which he took during his junior year.

And that doesn’t even include his coursework this past year as a dual-enrollment student, with these classes actually counting for more than AP credit. With a grade point average of 4.644 as of last semester, he ranks No. 1 at Oviedo High, his stellar academic record catapulting him to Princeton and a future beyond limitation."

Rohan Bhargava says he has learned as much from people outside the classroom as he has inside. Although the two-time state speech champion communicates easily and effectively with others, he understands the importance of listening to and learning from every person he meets.

Bhargava, valedictorian of the Jackson High School 2010 graduating class in Stark County’s Jackson Township, is an Akron Beacon Journal Gold Star Student. . . .

Bhargava, who will attend Princeton University in the fall, credits his parents as the biggest influences in his life.

‘‘I know it sounds like a cliche, but my parents made sure I always had what I needed to get where I wanted to go. They pushed me to do my best, but they never pushed me into doing anything I didn’t want to do.’’ . . .

Bhargava will graduate at the head of his class with the 5.2 grade point average he’s earned in his full course load of advanced-placement classes.

Bhargava, who is fluent in three languages, was chosen Mr. Jacksonite because he is well-liked by both teachers and students, said Parthena Draggett, head of the World Language Department and adviser to the Spanish National Honor Society.

‘‘He’s charismatic and has the respect of the students. He inspires teachers and makes them look forward to teaching each day,’’ Draggett said.

The National Merit Scholarship recipient is president of the 2010 State Champion Debate Team, the first state championship team in the school’s history. He’s captain of the Academic Challenge Team, an officer in the Spanish Club and a member of Student Council.
