How about crew

system August 22, 2006, 1:34pm 12

eugenie, what do you mean by ‘50 walk ons to start and 2 to finish’?? thanks

Weasel8488 August 22, 2006, 7:13pm 13

He means that the other 48 weren’t cut out for it and were either cut or quit.

system August 23, 2006, 5:39am 14

Im a little confused: does that mean that there were 50 Crew recruits that year??

eugenie98 August 23, 2006, 9:37am 15

A walk-on is someone who was not recruited who “walks on” to open tryouts.

Many times the walk-ons have relatively limited competitive rowing experience (for crew) and so the failure rate is pretty high. It might be lower for other sports, but crew is notorious for cutting and crushing walk-ons.

system August 23, 2006, 10:45am 16

oh, ok understood. by any chance do you know how many recruit spots there are for Crew?

cookiemom August 23, 2006, 11:10pm 17

For men’s crew it’s about 20-25 - half lightweight and half heavyweight. Last year there were about a hundred walk-ons and only 2 or 3 were left by the end of the season. Here are a couple of articles about last year’s freshman walk ons and recruits.

system August 24, 2006, 8:30am 18

Hi, surely it must be more than that if there are 2 boats each for Heavyweights and Lightweights? Also, does that mean that nearly all of these potential recruits are admitted? thanks

cookiemom August 28, 2006, 11:27pm 20

They try to field two boats for heavy and light, but they don’t always succeed. There was only one heavyweight 8 boat last year. And no they don’t accept all recruits. That’s why they depend on walk ons to fill the boats.
