Melamine - a trick that might spoil some treat

Halloween is here, and while everyone is talking about candy and other treats, this little molecule is making the headlines again:

[Melamine scare worries Asia’s trick-or-treaters - Yahoo! News](http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081031/ap_on_re_as/as_asia_halloween_1)

And it might linger in the food chain for up to ten years, according to some experts:

[Melamine already in global food chain: experts - Yahoo! News](http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081031/ap_on_re_as/as_china_tainted_food_7)

And this:

[Chinese melamine has already tainted global food chain | Seattle Times Newspaper](http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008329909_apaschinataintedfood.html)

While Chinese officials seem to be dealing with the issue, the scary part is that even if food producers stop using melamine as an additive, there are may be other, nitrogen-rich compounds which some crooked mind might use in its place. It just shows how vulnerable our food supply really is.
