REI is a good place to look for practical, lightweight, technical winter clothes. Land’s End catalog has some good stuff, too, but not all kids will wear their stuff.

We live in Wisconsin. My oldest is a musician and keeping his hands warm is a must. Over the years he tried a variety of different gloves, but his absolute favorite has been a pair of heavy weight gloves from Columbia. He wears size XL but he is a big guy. He says they even work well for his one hand that has reduced circulation, so tends to get colder more easily. Columbia gear tends to be more common here in WI but I would guess that Northface would also be fine as well. Be prepared to spend $50-60 unless you can find some on sale.

We actually got the gloves when he was in high school and he is now 26! They lasted a long time and they look ratty, but still keep his hands warm so he is not interested in looking for something new. If I remember correctly, they were heavy weight ski gloves. A lot of winter wear is rated for temperatures.
