mens pants

I am in trouble, and I need the shopping gurus of CC to help me out!

My boyfriend ripped his gray pants at work a few weeks ago, and we have only been able to find a black pair so far that fits right. He has to wear that black pair to work every day now and can’t wear half his shirts, so he is leaving for work every morning with steam coming out of his ears. I can’t take it anymore, so I offered to help him find pants.

He told me he needs 34/30 charcoal or carbon colored non-pleated slim fit suit pants (that’s a mouthful.) I don’t want to spend over $100 on these, and really would like it to be a lot less than that… I can’t believe he spends that much on clothes, every three months his weight changes when he shifts his workout routine anyway. We found the black pair at kohls for something like $30-$60 on sale, I forget how much exactly, but they didn’t have any gray pants that were the slim fits. I looked online at Macy’s, which is where he normally shops, and found maybe two pairs at the top of our budget and one pair at Macy’s. If he vetoes all those, I don’t know where else to look that won’t break the bank.

Any ideas? It seems this “slim fit” thing isn’t as easy to come by as it should be.

And while we’re on the subject, how long are mens suit pants supposed to be? He thinks I’m crazy, but I think his pants are way too short…

You might try looking for “tailored fit”.

Banana Republic has slim fit as well.

Look at the pictures to see the length of the pants…or order them unhemmed and take them to a tailor for hemming ($10 or less).

Nordstrom would have what he needs, not sure of price points however… I recently purchased 5 pair of pants there

And for a cheaper cost, and better then Kohls, try Joseph A Bank

34/30? Are you sure the numbers aren’t reversed? That could make a difference.

My H doesn’t wear dress pants- he wears 501s to work ;), but I found this on how long they should be.

Land’s End has lots of options.

I personally like the pant leg to come down almost to the heel in back. Otherwise when you sit down you wind up showing way too much sock. Personal preference though.

Kohl’s has a number of options. You probably just have to order online to get the size. You can get free shipping if you place the order from a kiosk in the stores.

Dockers has a number of options, depending on how dressy – from cotton khakis to poly dress pants. Look for their D2 designation. That’s what they call their “slim fit” pants. D1’s are like ultra skinny hipster pants. D3 are standard fit. D4 are relaxed. Kohl’s, Docker’s online and Zappos are all possibilities for finding Dockers.

You might get lucky at Marshalls or TJ MAX. They have been stocking a ton of slim fit poly dress pants. Black is easier to find than gray.

The sizes could be reversed, I don’t know mens pants sizes and just wrote what he said, maybe he said them in the wrong order. He’s 5’10 and and very fit-- he is a little bigger around the middle right now than usual because he bodybuilds and is just coming off of a bulk, which is why I don’t want to spend the $150 for nordstrom pants-- in 3 months he’ll have cut 2+ inches from his waist. He is actually having a big problem now because he needs slim cut dress shirts, but his arms are too big for the sleeves… pants are easy by comparison.

I was under the impression that pants should come down not quite to the heel, but maybe halfway ish? as long as they arent bunching at the bottom or anything. Kind of hard to picture without a leg in front of me. He says that pants should “touch the shoe,” which sounds accurate, but to him that means JUST BARELY brush the top. I guess if he wants to walk around in floods that’s not my concern, but I’m buying the pants and would like him to not look like a doofus in something I picked out for him. :P

Mens’s pants sizes are waist first, then inseam. So 34/30 means a 34 inch waist and 30 inch inseam.

Pant leg length is cyclical, right now it seem to be to the top of the shoe, but I personally don’t like the “flood pants” look. In a few years it will be back to the heel with a crease across the front of the shoe, like it was a few years ago.

34/30 sounds like a plausible size. No way a 5’10" guy “coming off a bulk” is gong to fit in 30 inch waist pants. 30 inch pants are for beanpole skinny guys – marathon runners or fashion models. Pretty unlikely that a 5’10" inch guy would be wearing a 34 inch inseam. That’s very long.

If he says 34/30s that’s what I would get him. Plus, it’s a pretty easy size to find.

30 is a pretty short inseam for 5’10" though. OP better check on the numbers! 34/30 sounds wrong to me, too, from the description.

I was going to say Banana or JCrew.

Actually, 34/30 is what my husband wears at the end of the bicycling season. Right now he’s at 37/30. And he’s 5’11". Try Lands End. Their stuff is fine for most guys.

30" inseam is feasible if you like the flood pants look.

I’m 6’3" and wear a 35-35.5 inseam, but I like the bottom to almost reach the floor. I’d probably be a 33 or even a 32 with the higher leg.

Express also has slim fit slacks. To be honest…he needs to try them on. Men’s slacks have a waist and inseam length, but our experience is that this varies wildly by vendor.

Check the tags inside of the black pants. Usually the waist number is first and the inseam second. My 5’6" son has a 30 in inseam. My 5’11" husband has a 32 inch inseam. Both happen to have 30 inch waists…they are very lean.

For slim cut (if his waist is 30 he would need this) really you should be able to find something at Banana Republic, Express or Gap for far less than $100 a pair.

If his waist is 34 and inseam 30, this would NOT be a slim size…in my opinion.

What’s sad is that he has pretty long legs, too. The first time I saw him in his work clothes I had a bit of a jaw drop moment, I think they’re way too short. I feel like the bottoms of your pants shouldn’t swing in the wind when you walk… I don’t want to push him to be unfashionable if that’s the trend these days, but I also don’t want him unwittingly walking around looking like he can’t dress himself if they really are too short. The black pants I bought him were a bit of a compromise because they were 30s but the way they lay on him they look a teeny bit longer. I wish those had come in gray!

Normally he is a 32 waist, and his slim fits were good then, but he put on weight in the last couple of months doing this bodybuilding bulking nonsense (don’t get me started on this.) I had him try on a few pairs of regular cut pants and I have to admit they did look way too baggy in the hips for him, the slim fit pants we just bought were a perfect fit. It seems that the regular cut pants sit higher on the waist and are just not his style at all and they aren’t very flattering on him. Maybe we’ll keep trying a mixture of both if I can get him to cooperate in a dressing room long enough.

Try Jos. A. Banks travelers pants. They retail for about $89, but they are on sale all the time. Mom2M gave you the link above.

The other Christmas, I bought S about a dozen pairs of slacks and ONLY ONE fit! I agree that the person who will be wearing the slacks needs to try them on, standing and sitting before you can know how the slacks will look & feel on him.

My S is a 28 x 28 and 5’6" – very tough to fit! I let him clothe himself now & he does a good job of it. He knows what he likes & has found a few styles and brands that work. Once you figure those out, you can buy on-line, especially on sale & with free shipping. Best if you can take it back to local store for full refund if they don’t work out.

We’ll definitely be going to try on pants if we can find any at a store we have locally, otherwise we’ll have to buy online with good return policies. I’ve hit kohls, penneys, and macys so far and not found anything in gray that fit him… we have a jos a banks and a banana republic, we may try those this weekend. I like Lands End, I wonder if they still carry any of their stock at Sears? My mom mentioned mens warehouse, but I’ve obviously never set foot in there so I don’t know what they’re like. I am so far out of my element we might as well be going to the moon.

All of his old pants were Alfani from Macy’s. I did find one of those in gray online (they didn’t have it in store), so we may be able to find another location that has those for him to try.

Even if they don’t have the COLOR you want, you could try on the SIZE & BRAND & STYLE in-store & then order the one in the correct color & size on-line. If you find an Alfani that fits well so you know his size, that might work well for ordering the grey slacks on-line.

I would suggest that you go to a store that young people frequent. You will likely find a “cut” of slacks there that fits better than you will find at Macys, Kohls or Penneys…or Lands End. My son (27) has had VERY poor luck at these places. The slacks sit WAY to high up on the waist for his tastes…and even their version of “slim”…well…it isn’t slim.

Try Banana Republic, Express, and Gap. You might find something at H and M too.

Can you see sock between the shoe and pant leg when he is standing up? If so, the pants are too short.

I think you can order on-line and then return at Sears if needed.
