My husband loves his Gortex Patagonia jacket. He’s been wearing it for years.
At the time it was bought at a whole earth store but Patagonia has a website.

I have one from REI and its made of gore-tex, but it has lots of vents on it. So it keeps the rain out but still lets you stay not as hot when it rains. All their stuff is expensive and i got mine for a present. If you try a hunting store it would be better than walmat. There is Cabela’s and I like french creak outfitters. FCO is a big store so they have lots of clothes and stuff. But I think FCO sells Columbia clothes so they are problably expensive too.

try the Campmor website [Camping Gear & Outdoor Gear - Outerwear & Outdoor Clothing from Campmor.com](http://www.campmor.com) and look for waterproof breathable. I like my waterproof EMS raincoat because it breathes. I had another waterproof one that was not breathable and I felt like I was inside a plastic bag - more moisture inside than out!

Campmor is a good place to know about. I’ve bought from them several times. Sierra Trading Post is another.

I would also poke around LL Bean. Not the cheapest place, but consistently high quality, useful stuff.

In raingear, so much depends on the use and temperature range. I just bought this crazy little Columbia bicycle racing rain jacket that weighs under 5 ounces, with a hood, and stuffs into a pouch the size of a tennis ball. I finally found a rain jacket I’ll actually wear in warm weather!

S2 is currently at college sloshing the torrential east coast rain showers (thanks Nicole) in his Columbia raincoat. It wasn’t too expensive and he likes it because he can ball it up and stuff it in his backpack.

Our family does a lot of outdoors activities (hiking, biking, canoeing, backpacking). S1 is a serious backpacker (200+ miles on John Muir Trail & England’s Coast-to-coast trail in 2 weeks of rain). We like Marmot PreCip, which is less expensive than Gore-tex. Watch for sales at Campmor, REI & Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) - they often discount the name brand raingear. Gore-tex is expensive, but if your DH is going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, comfort is worth the investment, especially if he keeps his jackets for 6 years or more.

Also - if you get PreCip or Gore-tex, get a bottle of Nikwax spray. It re-seals the waterproofing which can become less waterproof over time or with heavy use.
Make sure the jacket has pit zips to vent the body heat!

I hike the AT in NH most years and my EMS jacket with Goretex is amazing and I would highly recommend. My husband has a Marmot from Campmor. Their prices are great - check out their sales pages. We go there in person and it’s a real treasure hunt.

Wal Mart. Just going to put that out there. Not as prestigious as Harvard, Yale or Princeton (excuse me, I mean Patagonia, LL Bean, EMS) but Wal Mart does sell a rain jacket for about $20 - $30 that works. I wouldn’t want it for heavy-duty hiking and backpacking (it’s not particularly lightweight, for one thing) but the price sure is right. Style-wise, it’s a big step up from a yellow vinyl slicker, but it ain’t no Gore-Tex wonder.

I spend a great deal of the year outside ( in the Puget Sound area )& highly recommend Nikwax products to restore waterproofing, you even can use it on fleece.

Glad you found a jacket. For anyone else reading, Bass Pro Shop has extended sizes for many of their products. My big, tall Dad found the perfect jacket there for a hiking trip to Scotland.
