When writing “Why (insert college name here)?” essays, I know it’s common to research one’s department of interest and go in-depth about what is appealing about that particular department. But what about student organizations/extracurriculars?

If there is a particular student organization or extracurricular I’m especially keen on joining, and would it be appropriate to mention it and go into detail about it in a “Why ____?” essay? Would it be frowned upon since it isn’t directly related to the school’s academic program and most student organizations are common to many colleges? (Although in this case, I would be able to specify unique qualities of the organization.)
