Many teenagers now awaiting letters from admission offices have parents who have gone to college. They know the tricks. Others aren’t so fortunate, so they rely on advocates who play informal but critical roles – a concerned neighbor, teacher or coach. These mentors provide guidance through everyday problems and the college application process. And some even make wake-up calls.</p>
<p>Theirs is a time-honored role in society. The word mentor comes from the Greek. It appears in “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus puts the education and well-being of his son Telemachus in the hands of his friend, Mentor…</p>
