Mercedes vs Audi vs BMW

Piggle’s mom

Piggle’s dad is looking to lease a new car. Any thoughts/ experiences on C, E classes , Audi 4, 6 or BMW ?
He wants a car with minimum hassle.

For us, it was infiniti G37 vs BMW 328xi … we’re going BMW. Have had good experience with both infiniti and bmw … but the bmw is a more solid car and, in our case, seems to be a much better value. We’re picking up the new beemer this week. (2011 executive demo with 11000 miles).

Your mileage may vary!

The reliability data in Consumer Reports would suggest that if you want “minimum hassle,” European is not the way to go these days.

^^I second that. If your hubby needs a cool vehicle, he should look at Tesla. :)

He usually lease the car ( three years, 18, 000 miles ) -his company pays for it. He was driving Acura & infiniti for sometime , also had good experience with both. But wants to drive a different brand.

We went from a Toyota to a Mercedes E350. Love driving the car and it handles really well. The bad side is that the Mercedes is definitely more high maintenance than our previous cars. It’s out of warranty and it seems that once a quarter it spends a couple days in the shop for some obscure thing. I call it the car’s quarterly spa treatment.

He just turned 50. As a man of certain age , he wants a different car.I strongly suspect age has lot to do with this !!!
Tesla is not availble in DFW area . But he went & test drove Ferrai last weekend- just for fun.

I am the one who worry more about maintenance expenses & whatnot.

My DH leased an Audi 6 for three years. We really didn’t want to turn it in, so we bought it. He still likes it very much. I love my 10 year-old Toyota Highlander, but when I’m riding in the Audi I feel extremely safe. It has a great, solid feel that you don’t really get in a Toyota or Honda, even though they are great and run forever. The maintenance has been minimal, other than the normal service required of any car. If he is only driving it for three years I doubt that the Audi would present any frequent maintenance issues. We’ll see what happens in year five.

I have two friends with Audis that developed sufficiently bad problems that they got rid of their cars. Both swear they will never again buy an Audi.

I actually just got done comparing these 3 makes…along with a VW CC. Note these reviews all are for the 4WD’s, my prerequisite.

Didn’t like the BMW 328, not enough power. The 335 with the options I wanted got a little too pricey.

Mercedes…I liked it until I got the following text from S: “Mercs are for old people.” Harumph. Just cant shake that off. H think’s I’m crazy but I won’t even test drive it.

VW CC (4Motion), VERY hard to come by, we almost ordered one but the dealer couldn’t put it in the system. So we drove to the Audi dealer…

Audi A6, too big for what I need. Really, it’s a big car!

Audi A4, too boring. There’s 1000000 of them on the road.

A5 Coupe - JUST RIGHT. It’ll be on a boat the end of November, delivery around Christmas time! I can’t wait!   :D

H has A5 coupe…thrilled; great gas mileage; great ride…

Will his company pay for a leased Ferrari? If his company is footing the bill, he should simply pick the car he likes. Maintenance and repairs are not going to be an issue for a new vehicle driven for a couple of years.

There is something about men approaching certain age! This is how we ended up with a truck in our garage. Thank goodness there was not enough room in there to park a monster one. Now, I hear some talk about the new Tesla dealership that just opened at a shopping mall nearby…

No fair! Not always, there isn’t. I’m getting a little bit bored with my Honda, but I know it has at least two years’ use left in it, so I’m not shopping.

Hot new car or hot new wife, your choice. ;)

Many years ago, I had a colleague who was the son of a wealthy industrialist. He worked because he liked teaching middle school and he thought teaching was worthwhile work, not because he needed the money. He was turning 40, and really psyching himself up for the milestone.

One day in the teachers’ lounge he said, “So, I was talking to [his wife] the other day, and I told her I can’t decide whether to get a sports car or a mistress. She looked me in the eye and said, ‘Trust me, Don, a sports car is going to cost you a lot less.’” He paused, and then added, “Of course, she’s right.”

He got a pick-up truck. And last I knew, they were still married.

No experience with Audi, but between Mercedes and BMW, BMW hands down. H enjoyed his 328xi and I loved the X5. H also had a Mercedes, a lot of problem with it. The airbag popped out when we went over a bump in NYC, cost a lot of money to repair. We also had a lot of other problems with it. We also didn’t like the way it drove.

Mercedes drives great but costs an arm and a leg to maintain. Any little thing – $800. I will never own another one, just for that reason.

We are looking for a car to relace H’s Infinti. He is tall through the torso, not legs at 6’ 5". Can’t fit in a Honda, Jag, Toyota, Acura where his head hits the roof… any suggestions???

No personal experience with BMW or Mercedes, but we had an Audi A6 - two, actually. First one was a lemon and the dealer finally gave in and swapped it out for a new model after about a year. The second one, while technically not a lemon, cost us a boatload of money in maintenance and repairs as soon as it was out of warranty. It was solid feeling and DH (was his car) liked the ride, but we had a few other friends with Audis and all had their own sad stories about them. I have an Acura that has almost 140K miles and has never needed a major repair. When DH got rid of the Audi he got a Volvo C70 (convertible) and so far, so good.

When we had BMWs and mini a year ago, we had free maintenance.
