Merged Threads: Prayers for Elizabeth Edwards/ R.I.P. Elizabeth

Just heard a news story that all treatment has been halted and that she is resting at home, seriously ill…

This story has been very sad on many levels…

She posted what appears to be a “goodbye” letter today.

[Elizabeth Edwards Posts Apparent Goodbye Message - Political Hotsheet - CBS News](http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20024768-503544.html)

Oh, no! She seemed to be stable, and I was hoping that she would have much more time. Those poor children (including the adult daughter).

Oh my goodness - so sad. I saw her on Oprah last year and she seemed to be doing so well. She has had so many burdens to bear - from the death of her son to her unfaithful husband to cancer - yet she has always been a classy lady. Very sad news.

This is just so sad.

Oh no! That poor woman. I was hoping (and praying) that she would survive this. I think all the outside stress was too much for the meds to work.

I agree…those poor precious little kids…and the older D, too, who also had to go thru the tragedy of losing her precious brother.

I will pray for her (and, if you will, please pray for a dear sophomore in college who just learned she has cervical cancer).

How one woman could handle so much tragedy and disappointment with so much grace and optimism is both sad and inspiring. If she could keep a positive outlook and be grateful for the good things in her life, I should certainly be able to!

From People Magazine website:

"Elizabeth Edwards’s cancer fight has taken a turn for the worse, with the disease spreading to her liver and doctors recommending against additional treatment.

“Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive. She is resting at home with family and friends,” the Edwards family says in a statement to PEOPLE.

On Monday, Edwards, 61, posted a Facebook message to her friends.

“I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces – my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope,” she writes. “These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.”

Edwards, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2004, was briefly hospitalized last week after not feeling well over Thanksgiving. Doctors said her cancer had metastasized to the liver.

With the sudden turn, family members – including daughter Cate, a Washington lawyer, and her brother and sister, Jay and Nancy Anania – hastened to Chapel Hill, N.C., to be with her."

I wish that she could have been sustained by a certain very important family member.

Not that any time is a good time to lose a parent, but it’s very sad to think that these kids might lose their mom at Christmastime.

My two thoughts:

61 is too young to go.

John Edwards is no better than a snake.

This is tough. I had no idea it was getting so worse. It must be awefully difficult for her to leave her kids behind.

TatinG - I think snakes will protest!

You just have to wonder at how much the stress of his lies and infidelities damaged her immune system as it was trying to fight off the breast cancer.

For all she’s been through (son’s death, husband’s infidelity), she deserved to beat cancer. This is very sad.

May her faith and family continue to sustain her and may she leave this life knowing she always did the best she could, no matter what was thrown her way.

What an amazing woman.

I am a 3 time breast cancer survivor, the members on my board are very sad. Although decreasing stress is very important in prevention and treatment of cancer, it is not the thing that stops its progression. I know many people who live happy lives that suffer the same fate. Look at Linda McCartney. although many advances have been made with cancer of all kinds, it is still a horrible disease that takes too many lives and we dont have a real handle on it. I feel for her and was really hoping she would remain treatable for years much like a chronic illness.

Her doctor, she said at one time, would tell her “if she lit up like a Christmas tree.” (PET and CT scans light up when cancer is present.) As a cancer survivor I can never look at those flickering lights on trees quite the same way.

May she find peace, and be surrounded by her family’s love.

I am sure this is made harder by knowing her children will go to him to be raised.

I think that is one reason she wrote the books. to have a voice in the future. I guess he’ll be moving back into the big house. :(

I am sure this is made harder by knowing her children will go to him to be raised.

Ugh…and if he ends up with that Rielle (sp?) chick, imagine that she will also be raising those kids. What a travesty. I hope the older sis can have a hand in raising them.

So true… So sad…
