I have not heard of that happening. I think they more just have an accurate enough yield model that they can budget pretty closely.

They generally do not. Just as all schools admit more students than they expect to yield, colleges also offer more merit than they expect to distribute. Universities have sophisticated calculations to figure out the balance.

When does Pitt send merit letters right after the admission letter ?
Does it come in snail mail ?
It can come any time from the point of admission to when they stop evaluating for merit, which is usually March 1. You will see notification first in your portal.
Process sure takes quite a long time, from what I have heard they release it every Tuesday night. I was accepted on 10/12 and heard nothing yet.

I saw it somewhere that only 17% of students getting merit from Pitt. We almost gave up hope here. We like Pitt in every aspect but not getting merit as OOS student really hurts the chance of committing.

Sadly I have heard that merit can come anytime between acceptance letter and March:( I have heard that merit letters get posted to document center on Tuesday nights after 7pm so that is a good day to check so you don’t drive yourself nuts:) Mine is always empty. LOL.
Update: I got 2k per yr merit scholarship Dec 13. I received my acceptance on November 6th. 1540, 14 APs, in state, Computational Biology

14 APs!!! Do you mind sharing which 14? That’s a lot considering it breaks down to about three or four per year and while our school offers a lot of APs, I’m not sure how one would accomplish that

At my school 14 isnt rlly uncommon, at nearby schools where they have less prerequisites for classes, I know many ppl who graduate with 17-20 APs plus linear algebra or calc 3
What is AP seminar and AP research?
They are part of a 2 part capstone program for receiving an AP Capstone Diploma which is like Collegeboards version of the IB Diploma tho not nearly as well known yet. They focus around writing technical papers.
