Merit Aid, University of Pittsburgh, class of 2028

Got 10k/yr merit scholarship!! Accepted on 11/06 (major is Economics-Statistics), received scholarship notification on 12/13. I only have a 3.75 UW GPA, so I’m pleasantly surprised. I’m also OOS, 11 APS (self-studied 1 AP, all 4’s and 5’s on the exams), 35 ACT. I go to a STEM magnet school.

Does being accepted into the Honors program possibly mean more merit or need-based aid?

I know of no connection to need aid.

In terms of merit aid, the Chancellor’s Scholarships are specifically allocated within the Honors pool. There are not many of them but they are great scholarships if you can get one.

There is no further merit or need-based aid automatically connected to honors acceptance.

As @NiceUnparticularMan said, a very small number (50) of those admitted to the honors college will be interviewed for a Chancellor’s Scholarship and even smaller number (15) will receive it. If your student were to get an invitation for an interview, that invitation would likely come in early February.

Have some students berm notified of honors?

Not to my knowledge. I note the application deadline for Honors (which could be submitted after the admissions application) was 12/1.

Honors notifications all come out on the same day. The last couple years it’s been in late February.

This makes sense, timing-wise, as it gives Pitt time to account for the students who withdraw after ED2 and EA decisions.

I’ve also always assumed the same about the early merit deadlines at some other colleges for what are otherwise still RD applications. You were interested enough to investigate and apply earlier than the normal RD deadline, but you can still do it even if you ED/REA somewhere else, but then you don’t withdraw . . . .
Probably just the pool they are looking for.

Has anyone received merit in their document center on Tuesday? Just curious if merit is still incoming. My document center is empty each Tuesday night. lol! Its seem like merit announcements have been very quiet…even before the holidays. Still remaining hopeful.

Daughter just received acceptance, but no financial (merit or other) included in letter. Does that mean, she’s not getting any?

No merit No change in doc center

Unfortunately, merit can take up until March to receive but I feel like that is late since we all want to make decisions. I wrote financial aid and they said “if you are going to receive, you will received by March, but you will only be notified if you are eligible”. Which stinks because it leaves you waiting if you are not getting any. It is what it is, but was just hoping to hear of more people getting some merit:) Hopefully soon we all have happy letters in our doc center:)

My daughter received her acceptance 11/1 and her merit award 12/18; so there’s still hope! Also, she didn’t receive an email regarding either news, so constantly checking the portal was the game …

Looking at prior year’s activity the new merit posts definitely trail off after the new year but there still are some that receive it.

When are Honors decisions released? Sorry if I missed it elsewhere in this string.

“…Students meeting the December 1 deadline will be notified of their Frederick Honors College admissions decision on or before March 1….”

I believe it has been mid-February in the recent past.

There is no guaranteed merit or acceptance but the correlation between merit and FHC admittance is high, particularly in-state.

Also, yields and models have already been mentioned (and models are surely critical) but aid is also about class profile construction. Pitt gets loads of CA and NY kids with 800 Math scores applying for their limited number of CS major slots. So, the university doesn’t need to incentivize enrollment in CS in the same way that Dietrich does when it receives its lone high-scoring, aspiring Anthropologist from Wyoming.

Finally, anything from before Class of ‘25 is no longer relevant. Pitt changed its aid model from primarily merit-based to primarily need- and diversity-based to increase what was at the time some of the worst Pell Grant numbers in the country. The school now matches Federal Pell Grants dollar-for-dollar. In return, the days of $20k / year merit for in-state valedictorians are gone.

Scrolled up through this thread and I don’t see any reports of merit scholarships for the College or Business. Has anyone accepted to the College of Business received merit? Particularly interested to know if anyone in-state has received merit. Thanks.
