Merit Aid, University of Pittsburgh, class of 2028

Same here. Got an email today with a “let’s do this” title and got hopes up that it was a merit offer or honors decision, but it was the same video message he got when accepted in Oct.

I believe U Mass Amherst would be about $38k too and Purdue is attractive for exactly that reason, and it makes Pitt’s tuition not SO insane out of state in light of what we would pay anyway in state. (I agree, I assumed in state would be more affordable).

Fyi…we just happened upon a $5K per year merit scholarship which isn’t much in the portal, but happy nonetheless for OOS. Anyone have success negotiating more merit $$?

OOS tuition for Dietrich this year is $38,520. My junior has been off campus since sophomore year and rent is very affordable compared to many other schools, her housing is less than I paid for the dorms.

My daughter received $5k per year 2/1. Her acceptance came October 19 so we had given up hope that she would get anything.

Do I still stand a chance at getting merit?
I got accepted back in October, I think around the 18th and haven’t heard anything. I heard that they are stingy with in-state students and CS majors which I am both of.

I think that’s pretty much everywhere since you don’t need to pay for the $6000 a year meal plan. Even paying $1000 a month for a bedroom in a shared house/apartment on a 12 month lease its usually cheaper than dorming on campus.

Happy to read that you have found affordable off campus housing for your student. We are trying to factor off campus housing costs into the decision for my D24. I took a quick look at rentals near Pitt campus and I saw some pretty high rents, but I didn’t take a deep dive. Is your student renting within comfortable walking distance to campus?

There is a HUGE range in off campus housing at Pitt but most is super close to campus. She is on Oakland Ave and it’s definitely closer than Sutherland was. She pays $700 a month (including utilities except internet) for her room in a 4 bedroom 2 bath apartment. Thankfully they will be there 3 years, you do have to pay for summer but it’s worth it not to move all of her stuff. There is new construction that will cost a lot more but it’s perfectly fine, reminds me of my off campus place near Cornell in the 90s.

My S18 was also Oakland Ave. orange brick places towards the far end. The bigger issue off campus in that area is parking. It’s pretty limited. You can find a spot somewhere - just don’t ever move the car

Thank you - I was seeing $1k and up for a private bedroom in a shared apartment, so your numbers make me feel better!

My S24 is trimming his list and it does look like Pitt is not going to make the cut. At his point we are either not getting merit or it wont be large enough. Good luck to all of yours.

Kind of a bummer. I did spend the whole day yesterday in the Bloomfield-Friendship-Garfield (Shadyside?) convergence with my S24 who stayed in town after graduating from Pitt. The BFG is about 2miles from Cathy.

I think we most likely will have the same action soon. It looks like my son is loved by NY schools more than Pitt. He got good merits from SB and NYIT.

Was it in your document center where your acceptance letter is?

Where did you see merit letter? In document center where acceptance letter is?

Yes was a separate letter that showed up in the document center. No email notice or anything.

Son received an email telling him to check the document center, so it had been sitting in there for a few days unnoticed.

Does anyone know what the process for registering for classes is for freshman
