What are my admissions/merit chances at engieering schools like WPI and MIT?
I have already been accepted to ASU Barrett with 16k a year and instate tuition but I want to go out of state to a better undergraduate school. I eventually want to go to medical school and don’t qualify for financial aid for undergraduate so i would have to get merit in order to make it affordable.
GPA: 3.7 (4.45, top 12%, have only gotten 1 semester B since freshman year)
ACT: 33
SAT Subject Tests: 800 M2, 750 Physics (only have taken AP Physics 1)
AP Tests: Human Geo (4), Comp Science (4), Calc AB (5), English Lang (5), APUSH(5), Physics 1 (4), Gov, Macroecon, Physics Mech, Physics E&M, Chem, Calc BC, English Lit.
Awards: National Hispanic Recognition Program, AP Scholar w Distinction( 13 AP tests after this year)
Ethnicity: Hispanic
EC: Best Buddies(3 years), Environment Club(2 years), International Childrens Club (co-founded this year), NHS (2 years), Investment Club (3 years), Cross Country (1 year), Soccer (2 years), Frisbee Club(1 year), Tutor for PreCalc +APUSH (2 years)
If there is any colleges that I should consider please comment them, I am just trying to consolidate a list of schools that I should research.
Your ECs and awards are definitely the strong points of your profile, but the AP courseload is also very impressive. Your ACT and subject tests are within range for WPI, so definitely apply there. If I were you, find some more colleges to apply to. University of Alabama will offer you a full scholarship, with a stipend(reserved for engineering majors) every year. Check it out. (As for MIT…I guess you could apply, but find some other colleges. Broaden your list a bit.)
Remember, since you’re looking to get into medical school, the name of your undergraduate university isn’t all too important. It should be known, yes, but you don’t need a prestigious undergraduate degree to get into a prestigious med school. What you will need is an impeccable GPA, and very nice ECs.
Thank you for the suggestions. For the sake of being brief, I only mentioned MIT and WPI but I am also applying to several other schools that reaches out to me and paid for me to apply like Rice, WPI and Colorado School of Mines. I was nominated for Danforth Scholars at WUISL, and am going to apply to Stanford, Cornell.

Well, there’s a few things to consider as a premed eng’g major…
Would your GPA suffer at a more at a school like MIT?
Would your parents pay for MIT? (no merit at MIT)
Why MIT if you want to go to med school?
I don’t know if WPI would be considered “better” than ASU Barrett or ASU Eng’g.
Will your GPA suffer as an eng’g major who’s premed.
How badly do you want to go med school? Lifelong dream? Something you’ve really considered?
Would you be ok if eng’g became your back up career?
How will med school get paid for? Private SOMs will likely be close to $100k per year by the time you’d enroll.
This past year my S2, who had similar stats to you -with a slightly better gpa, received very decent merit from Case Western and Illinois Tech. Illinois Tech actually gave him the opportunity to apply for a full complete ride.
He didn’t apply to WPI, so I can’t help you there.
In all honesty I think your gpa for MIT is a bit low. My S1 applied to MIT with a 4.0 and 2380 sat’s and was deferred and ultimately denied.
@mom2collegekids I want to go into Engineering undergrad+Med School because I am extremely interested in learning and want to help people the most with the talents that I have. Also if I decide half way through undergrad that I no longer want to go to med school, I want to have a good fall back plan. If I was accepted/enrolled in MIT, my parents would most likely finance it, however, I would likely be on my own for medical school; if i go to undergraduate full boat, my parents will help pay for med school the most that they can. I am not as worried as the cost of med school as i am undergraduate bc of the salary that doctors make, but I am not pursuing medicine because of the salary. I received a letter from WPI that is paying for me to apply and after researching a bit, I was extremely fond of the project based curriculum. In terms of GPA, I believe that I can maintain a high GPA anywhere because of the study habits and dedication that I have learned from the rigorous courses at my school; I am pretty accustomed to six-seven hours of homework a night.
@Marylandfour Where did your S2 end up? Yeah, I am a bit worried about my GPA; my freshman year really messed up my overall with a 3.0. I am not applying to any top schools until January because I will get a 4.0/5.0 this semester which will bring overall to 3.8/4.5.
Your gpa is fine for most schools, just wanted to let you know MIT would be a pretty tough admission.
S2 is attending University of Rochester, with merit and need-based scholarships combined. He is leaning towards computer engineering but is undecided for now. When he had to make a choice last April he just wasn’t that sure about engineering as compared to when he sent out apps in the fall. Otherwise I think he might have picked Illinois Tech.
Arizona State is a perfectly good school for serious students studying engineering. You just have to stay serious about academics and ignore the less serious students who also enter as frosh and party away their chance at college.
If the student is serious about eng’g and premed, then he’ll likely have similar friends. I’m not saying that serious eng’g students don’t ever party, and certainly MIT students party as well, but if you have friends who are serious students, you can maintain a balance between academics and social.
Check out WUE if all you want is OOS, but if you are really serious about med school then you want to consider if instate (or even the WUEs where you can establish residency like Utah) undergrad will give an edge into acceptance into your instate med school, saving you serious money. Future docs should be looking at free undergrad in as far as it is possible. But then again, I am not sure eng is the ideal undergrad for premed. http://wiche.edu/states
no PSAT?
@mommdc I don’t know how much undergrade prestige matters for med school or grad school admissions (if i decide against med school in the future), however, no matter what I end up doing, I want to go to a prestigious post grad. So with private schools, I do not think that location of undergraduate matters. Or does it?
It seems like prestige doesn’t matter at all. And please bear in mind that prestige to a high school student has nothing related to prestige in the eyes of med school admissions. For grad school, prestige doesn’t matter, your research experiences and the LOR to go with them is what matters. Of course a strong department is good, but high school students don’t consider that, they only consider what impresses their friends. Also which med school you go to is not important either. Explore the pre-med and med forums here.
My dd’s friend studied engineering at Olin in MA, tuition was free at the time but now it is 1/2 paid for you I believe. They also give need aid. He took a couple years to work and is now graduating med school.
