Merit question

If you received a large merit scholarship, one of the biggest ones, do you mind saying what you received and if you submitted SATs and if you submitted what your score was? My daughter got a 1330 and we are trying to figure out if that score is big enough to give her one of the larger scholarships, she needs large merit to afford the school as we are not expecting any needs based aid. Thank you.

My S22 got a 33 on the ACT and received one the biggest merit awards. I think it was 28K a year? They also give everyone who fills out a FAFSA a housing grant which I felt was 3k a year. It is a very expensive school. I think the biggest issue right now is no on-campus housing for juniors and seniors.

My son was admitted to St Joe’s, and he got a $29k/year Presidential Scholarship. He has a 4.0. and applied test optional. He will be a freshman in ‘24.

Congratulations! That is a great offer. Do you know what you plan to study or what you are interested in possibly doing after college?

Congratulations to your son! Do you know if he will accept, or is he still looking at other options?

Something I did not fully appreciate back when my son was applying was the overall area cost of living. Philly is very reasonable compared to other East Coast cities - it’s probably more comparable financially to a midwestern city. What this meant for us is that as my son moved into off-campus housing for junior and senior year, our housing costs dropped. A very nice surprise! There are many campuses, even in second and third tier cities or smaller where investors have bought up nearly all the surrounding properties, forcing families to spend $3k or MORE per month for off campus housing alone! I think my son pays $800 a month for his share of a house in Manayunk.

He is still looking at other schools. We visited St Joe’s. I liked it more than him. It’s not among his top 2 or 3, but in the next tier. He applied to 11. Still waiting for decisions from four. He probably won’t decide until March, when we expect to hear from the final schools. Some schools have indicated that we may get more gift aid once the FAFSA is completed. Need to really compare overall cost once we have all that info.

Sounds like you’re making smart moves. My son did not accept until May 1. When you get your final offers, would you mind sharing them?

My daughter applied to 20 colleges in 2021, Saint joes was her cheapest option with merit (33 act, 3.9+ UWGPA - 1 B). Unfortunately she is not a Philadelphia fan (although she loves cities).

Sure!

Thank you! I am planning on majoring in Biochem and Spanish with another minor, depending on the workload. I am not sure about career my career right now but I really love ophthalmology, so perhaps med school.

We weren’t offered the housing grant, did any current applicants get that? My daughter did get the honors program, $31k merit and $1k legacy (I got my undergrad and MBA there).
