Merit scholarships: recruiting or recognition tool?

If i do not get selected as a finalist, does that mean my merits/accomplishments are not just as good as others? Or does it mean being accepted already as an ED and is committed to the 2016 class placed me on the disadvantaged group?

I would say neither. Looking back at previous years' post there were several ED students that posted they were selected.

It is just so competitive. They give so few merit scholarships and have so many qualified students that are accepted. I think the ratio is 40 scholarships to 1500 incoming class. Assume Wash U accepts 4500 applicatants (30% yield). So merit scholarships are awarded to less than 1% of the accepted students and less then 3% of the students that enroll.
