Art has always been my forte. I can spend hours and hours sketching or painting without realizing the time. However, I’ve never really had “artist” friends. Most of my friends are normal kids with interests in sports or choir or academics, etc. etc. I’ve always been the “artist” in a very diverse group.

I’m taking AP Art for the second year and I feel kinda out of the loop with all the other hardcore art students. They’re the ones who talk nonstop about indie films and offbeat art blogs and whatnot. Not necessarily in a pretentious way, but it feels kinda elitist. Art kids are always the ones who feel “misunderstood”, but they’re pretty exclusive themselves. It seems that because I focus so much on academics, they don’t regard me as a real “artist”.

Although I don’t necessarily care to gain “acceptance” into their clique, I want to stop feeling so uneasy around them. You’d think that with art as a common ground, there would be plenty to discuss, but that is not the case. Is this pretty much a hopeless situation or should I make more of an effort? Any advice appreciated :)
