messed up? no chances?

hi i’m a sophomore, soon to be a junior. and i took like one ap class this year and i’m an average student i guess but i dont want to be that average student if i want to get into NYU or UPENN or like some ivy league college. i really regret not doing any clubs this year but i want to try so hard next year and the year after that i’ve always wanted to be a doctor and my gpa right now is like a 3.5 and i really want to go to an ivy league. you guys think i have chances? i dont know i’m really worried and i really wish i knew better :(

Do you still have a chance? Yes. At this point there is no reason to feel sorry for yourself - you just have to bust your butt. Focus on getting all A’s next year, getting involved in a couple things you are PASSIONATE about, and start studying for your standardized tests.

One more piece of advice, study for the PSAT this summer. I didn’t even take it (I am a rising senior) and I honestly regret it so much. Buy a book and be a national merit finalist. That will out-weigh a couple B’s

^^As an NMF (and an NAF), I doubt that the award outweighs much at all at top schools. NMSFs are encouraged to not have their scores sent to top schools because top schools, which have a ton of NMFs/NMSFs and therefore don’t brag about them, don’t really care. It might make a difference at some schools, but not at Ivies or HYPSM.

^It would be better to be a NMF with a couple b’s than not being one with a couple b’s. And OP certainly can’t change those b’s.

There is a very low chance, because your GPA is going to max out at like 3.7. If you have no hooks you can’t compensate for that GPA.

Are URM status, legacy, recruit, and overcoming major obstacle the only hooks? Or can extremely focused 1 or 2 EC’s with national and international recognition be a hook?

^ yeah… because international status is pretty prestigious.

go to the chances thread or college admissions.
then get off cc and start studying.
