My ATT cell phone two years contract is ending, so I have a choice. Right now I am paying about $100 (taxes and fees included) for the service with one Iphone with the lowest data plan and two unintellegent phones and only 450 min. anytime/mo. I do not use a lot of cell phones as wifi and home phones are used for busines. OTOH, if I got a smart phone, that can give me the email access much faster, it is not a must, but a good feature. Right now I discounnected the text messaging because of the high fees.

I have shopped around, Metro PCS is offering an attractive deal. $130 flat fee(taxes and fee included) per month for three Android phones with all you can eat plan(Unlimited voice, data and text messaging). Roaming in USA is free, no sure in Canada. There is no contract for MetroPCS, all month to month, cancel any time.

The cons of MetroPCS is that I have to buy all new phones ($39-$200) from MetroPCS and the unlocked TDMA phones on the market is not going to work.

My questions:
Is Metro PCS is a good carrier in the SF Bay Area? Anyone using it in the Chicago Area? As my D is going to use it and they told me they are using the Verizon towers in IL, they do not have outlets in Chicago.

Don’t know anything about MetroPCS but if your AT&T phones are SIM Card phones, you should check out Simple Mobile, a company/service that uses T-Mobile’s system and has a $40 unlimited plan (per phone) for 3G service. I understand that AT&T will permit you to unlock your phone when your contract is about to expire. The drawback is, no iPhone capability on Simple Mobile.

I don’t know anyone in Ca who uses it. My D has a large number of friends who use it in Florida. She says people get it because it is cheap but the service is terrible. I replaced the word terrible for the one she used which is probably not CC allowed.

There must be a lot of ppl using it. Their stores are every where. But I am out, I just found from their coverage map that my home is in the “worst” coverage area. I don;t want bad reception coverage in my home.

I find the commercials they air in the NYC region offensive. (2 Indian actors with heavy accents that often act stupid and stereotyped). For that reason and I like my Verizon Wireless service, I have never looked at them.

A friend of my D’s has it. The service is slow and really unreliable, but he got it as a cheap way to afford a smartphone and i think doesn’t want to admit it’s bad. I think its nickname is Metro POS (fill in the acronym.)

Some homes are in the blind spot of all cell towers. I have a friend who’s home is in a valley and cannot get any cell receptions, so he has to buy a small “cell” tower in his home (its a cell router using internet), and broadcast his own cell signal.
